Kamala Harris Fact-Checked for False Claims About Trump’s Abortion Stance

Vice President Misleads Public on Trump’s Position Despite Clear Statements.

Vice President Kamala Harris faced backlash and fact-checking on social media after falsely claiming that former President Donald Trump would implement a federal abortion ban. This misleading statement was quickly corrected by a community note on X, highlighting Trump's consistent position against a national ban.

Harris tweeted, “Donald Trump would ban abortion nationwide. President @JoeBiden and I will do everything in our power to stop him and restore women’s reproductive freedom.” This assertion came just days after Trump explicitly stated in a debate with Biden that he would not sign a federal abortion ban, a stance he has maintained throughout his 2024 presidential campaign.

  • Community Note: The fact-check on X clarified, “President Trump has repeatedly said he will not sign a national abortion ban.” It provided multiple links to news reports and a video from Trump’s Truth Social account where he emphasized his belief that abortion laws should be decided by states and “the will of the people.”

  • Trump’s Debate Statements: During a recent CNN debate, Trump reiterated his opposition to federal bans on abortion and abortion pills, defending the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. He pointed out that Democrats, like Biden, are the true extremists in the abortion debate, citing the permissiveness of late-term abortions under Roe v. Wade as radical.

  • Historical Context: Biden promised to reinstate Roe v. Wade’s protections if re-elected. Democrats have leveraged the abortion issue since the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, with pro-abortion stances winning several elections, even in traditionally conservative states.

Harris has a history of making inaccurate statements about Trump’s abortion stance. In June, she claimed, “Trump would seek to ban abortion nationwide, with or without the help of Congress.” In May, she accused Trump of “gaslighting” voters about his intentions regarding a national abortion ban, despite his clear opposition to such measures.

As the 2024 election approaches, Trump’s campaign has carefully navigated the abortion issue. Although he supports states enacting abortion restrictions, he has criticized laws in Arizona and Florida as too conservative.
