Kamala Harris Concedes, Says She’s Proud of Campaign Accomplishments

Harris praises her campaign's efforts while pledging to keep pushing Democratic ideals.

In a speech nearly twelve hours after the election was called, Vice President Kamala Harris formally conceded to President-Elect Donald Trump, congratulating him on his decisive victory. Despite the outcome, Harris struck a defiant tone, vowing to continue promoting the Democratic agenda and expressing pride in her campaign’s efforts.

With Trump projected to hold a substantial 301 electoral votes over Harris's 226, with Arizona also likely leaning in Trump’s favor, the message from Harris was clear: this loss is far from the end for her or her party. “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fuels this campaign,” she said to a gathering of her supporters in Washington, D.C. The crowd responded with cheers, though the somber tone of defeat was unmistakable.

Harris went on to praise her campaign, saying, “I am so proud of the race we ran and the way we ran it.” She highlighted the 107-day campaign as one of “building community and building coalitions,” an effort she believes has left the Democratic Party more united and inclusive. Yet, the numbers tell a different story. The final tally reflects a clear choice by Americans in favor of Trump’s vision, a vision Harris was unable to overcome, even with a coalition strategy aimed at diverse demographics.

Some notable quotes from her concession speech include:

  • “The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not voted for, but hear me when I say … the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up.”

  • “I also told him [Trump] that we will help him and his team with their transition and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.”

Despite these conciliatory words, Harris used the opportunity to double down on her party’s platform, pledging to continue championing the issues central to her campaign. She vowed to "never give up" on the fight for issues like reproductive rights, gun control, and social justice a rallying cry that echoes the sentiment of many disappointed Democratic supporters who feel their platform did not resonate enough with the broader American electorate.

Harris continued with a call to arms for her supporters, urging them to keep pushing forward. “We will never give up the fight for our democracy, for the rule of law, for equal justice,” she declared, signaling the likelihood that the Democrats will shift their efforts into other arenas, including court challenges and lobbying for influence in state and local elections.

The concession may have formally ended Harris’s campaign, but her commitment to pressing her political agenda is clear. Democrats appear to be regrouping, determined to challenge Trump and Republicans at every level. Harris concluded her speech with a promise: “We will continue to wage this fight in the voting booth, in the courts, and in the public square.”

As the country heads into a new chapter under Trump’s leadership, Americans will be watching to see if Harris and her party can make good on these promises or if the message they’ve championed this election cycle ultimately loses traction.
