Justin Trudeau Expected To Resign As Canadian Prime Minister Amid Liberal Party Collapse

Trudeau faces growing pressure from his own party as Canada braces for a conservative wave.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly preparing to announce his resignation this week, following mounting pressure from his own party and an impending electoral disaster. Sources within the Liberal Party indicate that Trudeau wants to step down before the party’s national caucus meeting on Wednesday to avoid the perception that he is being forced out.

Trudeau, who has led the Liberal Party since 2013 and served as prime minister since 2015, has watched his popularity plummet in recent years. His leadership has been rocked by a series of scandals, economic failures, and growing discontent within his party.

  • Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s Resignation: In December, Freeland publicly stepped down, issuing a letter that was widely seen as a rebuke of Trudeau’s leadership.

  • Polling Collapse: A recent Ipsos poll found the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, holding a massive 25-point lead over Trudeau’s Liberals, with 45% support compared to just 20% for the governing party.

  • Weak Leadership Against Trump: Only 14% of Canadians believe Trudeau is capable of handling U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, compared to 39% who favor Poilievre.

The political turmoil in Canada comes as Trump prepares to take office in just weeks, with plans to impose steep tariffs on Canadian imports, further straining U.S.-Canada relations.

Trudeau and his aides attempted to mitigate damage by meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November. However, the meeting did little to change the incoming administration’s stance. Trump, never one to shy away from a political jab, even suggested Canada should become the 51st U.S. state if it could not afford to pay the tariffs.

Shortly after the meeting, Trudeau weakly pushed back, claiming tariffs would hurt American consumers. But Trump immediately fired back on Truth Social, mocking the Canadian leader:

With his party in shambles, economic policies failing, and a dominant conservative opposition poised to take power, Trudeau’s days in office appear numbered.

The Liberal Party now faces a brutal internal fight over leadership, while Canadians look ahead to a likely Poilievre-led government in the next election.
