Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Citizenship Requirement for Voting

Another activist ruling protects illegal votes while tying Trump's election integrity plan in legal knots.

In a move that once again places activist judges above the will of the American people, a federal court has blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections. The ruling, handed down by Clinton-appointed Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, halts one of the most common-sense reforms in modern election law verifying that voters are actually citizens.

Let that sink in: a federal judge has ruled that you don’t need to prove you’re a citizen to vote in the country’s most important elections.

The executive order, signed by President Trump in March, aimed to eliminate voter fraud by ensuring only legal citizens can register and vote. It also required that individuals enrolled in public assistance programs have their citizenship status assessed before receiving voter registration forms a simple check, now branded as controversial by Democrats and their allies in the courts.

In her ruling, Kollar-Kotelly granted a preliminary injunction blocking the order from going into effect while a lawsuit brought by the Democratic National Committee and left-wing groups plays out in court. These groups claim the order could "silence millions," a laughable argument unless they plan to count non-citizens as voters.

The facts are clear:

  • Non-citizens are voting. In 2023, a Virginia Department of Elections report revealed that over 1,400 non-citizens were removed from the voter rolls after having already cast ballots.

  • States like California and New York allow non-citizens to vote in certain elections, setting the stage for broader abuse without federal safeguards.

  • Trump’s order specifically referenced the Constitution’s directive for states to secure elections and follow federal law prohibiting non-citizen voting and post-Election Day ballot counting.

But none of that seems to matter to the activist judiciary. This is the 108th ruling blocking or freezing a Trump administration policy a staggering number that underscores the systemic judicial obstruction facing real reform.

Judge Kollar-Kotelly also blocked the executive order’s provision requiring agencies to verify citizenship on public assistance forms, but she refused to block Trump’s rule tightening mail-in ballot deadlines a small but important win for election integrity.

Here’s the core issue: Democrats are terrified of any reform that secures our elections, because their grip on power depends on chaos ballot harvesting, same-day registration, and zero verification. President Trump is fighting to clean up a system the Left has spent decades rigging.

This isn’t about “silencing” voters. It’s about protecting the sanctity of the vote for actual American citizens.

As Trump said when he signed the order “We must safeguard American elections in compliance with federal laws that protect voting rights and guard against illegal voting, fraud, and other malfeasance.”

And he’s right.

But that’s a threat to the Democratic machine and their judicial allies are more than willing to do their dirty work from the bench. The fight for free and fair elections is far from over.
