Joy Behar Laments Lack of ‘Checks and Balances’ as House Moves Right
Behar decries GOP dominance following Trump’s sweeping victory
Joy Behar is not taking the latest election results well. In an animated episode of The View on Thursday, Behar and her cohosts grappled with the Republicans’ success in securing the White House, the Senate, and likely the House of Representatives. As President-Elect Donald Trump celebrates his victory, Behar’s reaction underscores the deep frustration felt across legacy media as the GOP tightens its control over Washington.
The conversation opened with cohost Sara Haines praising Kamala Harris for her concession speech, saying the Vice President had shown grace and resolve. Haines suggested that, had the roles been reversed, Trump might not have shown the same decorum. “She’s even inspiring in defeat,” Haines said. “The things she said about not stopping the fight were powerful.”
But Behar wasn’t having it. “I’d like to be positive, but today I don’t yesterday I felt better. Maybe it was the Valium,” she quipped, trying to laugh off her disappointment. She went on to lament, “We lost the Senate, the Supreme Court, the Executive Branch, and the House is on the verge of going to him. It’s pathetic! There are no checks and balances!”
The longtime host voiced her disbelief that Harris, who she described as “intelligent and qualified,” could lose to a figure like Trump, whose campaign was marked by rallies and off-the-cuff moments that clearly connected with voters. Behar seemed to miss, however, that for many Americans, Harris’s record was anything but inspiring. Under the Biden-Harris administration, soaring inflation, a weak border, and skyrocketing crime eroded confidence in Democratic leadership, leading to a decisive shift in this election.
Media’s Reluctance to Look Inward
Behar’s reaction mirrors that of other legacy media figures who continue to blame outside factors sexism, misinformation, and even Elon Musk for Harris’s loss rather than acknowledging the potential shortcomings in her policies. Despite years of favorable media coverage and a billion-dollar campaign push, the Democratic platform struggled to gain traction with a frustrated electorate.
With Trump returning to the White House and the GOP poised to secure a strong foothold in Congress, conservatives view this election as a clear repudiation of the past four years. While Behar and others in the media mourn the loss of what they see as “checks and balances,” much of America appears ready to hand Republicans a mandate to reset the direction of the country.
