Joni Ernst Backs Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense Amid Scrutiny
Senator praises Hegseth’s commitment to Pentagon reform and military standards.
Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) expressed her support for Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, following their meeting on Monday. Hegseth, a veteran and former Fox News host, has been meeting with Republican senators as part of the confirmation process and faces heightened scrutiny over past allegations.
“I appreciate Pete Hegseth’s responsiveness and respect for the process,” Ernst said in a statement. She emphasized Hegseth’s commitment to key reforms within the Department of Defense. “Pete committed to completing a full audit of the Pentagon and selecting a senior official who will uphold the roles and values of our servicemen and women—based on quality and standards, not quotas and who will prioritize and strengthen my work to prevent sexual assault within the ranks.”
Hegseth’s nomination has been clouded by allegations, including a settlement involving an accusation of sexual misconduct, which he denies. Despite these claims, Ernst voiced her confidence in Hegseth, saying, “I look forward to a fair hearing based on truth, not anonymous sources.”
Hegseth, who briefly spoke with reporters after the meeting, described their conversation as productive. “The more we talk, the more we’re reminded as two combat veterans how dedicated we are to defense,” he said.
Trump Defends His Nominee
President-elect Trump lauded Hegseth’s willingness to risk his successful media career to serve the country. Speaking in an interview, Trump emphasized Hegseth’s patriotism, recalling his conversation with the nominee. “I told him, ‘You’re making a lot of money at Fox, your family’s doing well. Are you sure?’ He said, ‘This is all about America.’”
Trump added, “He didn’t hesitate. That’s a very big, risky thing he’s doing. When he goes and he says, ‘I’m going to give up millions of dollars in order to possibly become the Secretary of Defense,’ a lot of people would say, ‘I have to think about it.’ He said, ‘I don’t have to think about it.’”
The Road Ahead
Hegseth’s confirmation process is shaping up to be a contentious one, as his detractors seize on past allegations while supporters, like Ernst, focus on his vision for reforming the Pentagon and prioritizing military readiness.
With his combat experience and outspoken advocacy for American servicemembers, Hegseth’s nomination is likely to spark vigorous debate in the weeks ahead. Trump’s confidence in Hegseth and Ernst’s vocal support signal strong Republican backing for his confirmation.
