‘No Concern’: House Speaker Weighs Obama Testimony on Russia Probe

Mike Johnson says there is “no concern” about subpoenaing Obama as GOP pushes for accountability over alleged intelligence scheme.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) signaled Monday that he has “no concern” about subpoenaing former President Barack Obama to testify regarding his alleged role in what Republicans are calling a “treasonous conspiracy” to fabricate the Trump-Russia collusion narrative.

Johnson’s remarks follow bombshell allegations from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who recently declassified over 100 documents purportedly showing that Obama, former FBI Director James Comey, former CIA Director John Brennan, and former DNI James Clapper coordinated to discredit Donald Trump’s 2016 victory. Gabbard referred the matter to the Department of Justice, describing the plot as a “manufactured intelligence document” meant to subvert the will of the American people.

“There’s no question in my mind that this intelligence community assessment that President Obama ordered be published… was manufactured intelligence that sought to achieve President Obama and his team’s objective,” Gabbard told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo. “It was about undermining President Trump’s presidency and subverting the will of the American people.”

In an interview with CBN’s David Brody, Johnson was pressed on whether he supports bringing Obama and other top officials before Congress. “Of course,” Johnson said. “I think we have a responsibility to follow the truth where it leads and to do it in an unbiased fashion, to do effectively the opposite of what that other team did.”

When asked directly if he was comfortable with the idea of subpoenaing a former president, Johnson did not hesitate. “We have no concern about that,” he said. “If it’s uncomfortable for him, he shouldn’t have been involved in overseeing this, which is what it appears to us has happened.”

Johnson, who served on Trump’s impeachment defense teams, recalled that Republicans had long suspected the Russia probe was a “shameless, false set of accusations” designed to undermine the Trump presidency. “They looked right under the camera and just lied, clearly. And they knew what they were up to the whole time so there must be accountability for that,” he said.

Key points from Johnson’s comments:

  • He described the collusion narrative as a “hoax” and part of a broader scheme to destroy Trump’s presidency.

  • He emphasized the need to restore faith in the justice system, which he says was eroded by politically motivated intelligence operations.

  • He confirmed that both Brennan, Clapper, and potentially Obama himself could be questioned under oath if the evidence demands it.

The Speaker’s blunt remarks underscore a growing appetite within the GOP to hold Democrats accountable for the now-debunked collusion narrative. As Republicans continue to dig into the origins of the 2017 intelligence assessment, Johnson pledged that the investigation will follow every lead.

“These are very serious allegations with very serious implications,” Johnson said. “We’re going to have very serious people working on it, and we will get the answers.”
