John Legend: Trump’s ‘Masculinity’ Pulling Young Black and Latino Voters from Biden
Legend warns Biden campaign to address Trump’s appeal to minority men
Liberal activist and singer John Legend has highlighted a growing concern for the Biden campaign: young black and Latino male voters shifting their support towards former President Donald Trump. Speaking on the “Pod Save America” podcast, Legend attributed this trend to Trump’s display of “masculinity,” which he believes appeals to some men.
“Well, I think Trump performs a form of masculinity that I think is attractive to some people,” Legend said. “To be clear, black men, even an uptick for Trump, is still a landslide for Biden. … But there is an uptick and that uptick, it may be enough to win Wisconsin or it may be enough to win Michigan.”
Legend acknowledged that while Biden retains significant support among black men, the increasing shift towards Trump could be decisive in critical swing states. “It’s an issue that the campaign is going to have to deal with,” he added. “But I do think Trump performs a form of masculinity that is appealing to some men, black, white, Hispanic, across the board, and that may explain the uptick.”
The “Voice” coach also pointed out that misinformation about the economy might be contributing to Trump’s appeal. “I hear a lot of misinformation and disinformation about the economy under Trump and what’s happened since. To be clear, the economy is doing quite well,” he noted, suggesting that the Biden administration’s economic achievements are being overshadowed by false narratives.
The podcast discussion also touched on the perception that voting for Biden feels “uncool,” particularly among younger voters. “It does feel uncool and they are both old,” Legend commented. “And it’s hard for people. They both decline in their ability to talk to the people and just seem vigorous and energetic. And it’s hard for people to get excited about that.”
This shift in voter sentiment is supported by recent polling data. A Fox News survey in May revealed that President Biden’s support among black voters has decreased from 79% before the 2020 election to 72%. Additionally, a Gallup poll conducted in April indicated that 41% of Americans view inflation or the high cost of living as the most significant financial issue facing their families, marking the highest figure yet in Gallup’s annual Economy and Personal Finance poll.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the Biden campaign will need to address these challenges and counter Trump’s appeal to minority male voters if they hope to secure key battleground states.
