Jimmy Lai Sentenced to 20 Years for Defying Chinese Communist Party
78-year-old pro-democracy publisher faces death in prison for standing up to Beijing's tyranny.

Hong Kong's last remaining voice for freedom has been silenced at least in the eyes of the Chinese Communist Party. On Monday, 78-year-old newspaper publisher and pro-democracy hero Jimmy Lai was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the "crime" of exposing the truth and defending liberty in Hong Kong.
The verdict wasn’t justice it was vengeance.
Lai, a Chinese-born British citizen and founder of Apple Daily, was convicted under Beijing’s Orwellian National Security Law, a sweeping piece of legislation that has been used to jail anyone who dares to challenge Communist Party rule. His real crime? Supporting the 2019 pro-democracy protests and publishing content that Beijing didn’t like.
He has already endured more than 1,800 days in solitary confinement. Now, with a 20-year sentence handed down, the 78-year-old faces what amounts to a death sentence behind bars.
Apple Daily, Lai’s newspaper, was one of the few remaining outlets in Hong Kong willing to criticize Beijing before it was shut down in 2021.
Six of Lai’s former employees were also sentenced this week, receiving prison terms between 6 and 10 years.
Chinese officials publicly gloated, calling Lai the “mastermind” of the democracy movement.
Let’s be clear: this wasn’t a trial. It was a show. A message to the world that freedom is dead in Hong Kong and that those who dare defy Xi Jinping’s regime will pay a brutal price.
The international response, though loud, has been toothless.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called the prosecution “politically motivated,” stating plainly that “for the 78-year-old, this is tantamount to a life sentence.” Meanwhile, the State Department condemned the ruling, calling it “an unjust and tragic conclusion.” Senator Marco Rubio and Rep. John Moolenaar joined in denouncing the sentencing, with Moolenaar pointing out that President Trump personally demanded Lai’s release in direct talks with Xi last October.
But words alone won't free Jimmy Lai.
His son, Sebastian, said it best:
“He’s essentially getting a death sentence for that [defending freedom]. Surely a man who has given so much for liberty deserves a bit of it himself.”
What Lai represents is bigger than one man. He is a symbol of what happens when authoritarian regimes go unchecked and of how quickly the world will look away if it’s politically inconvenient to act.
This isn’t just about Hong Kong. It’s about the future of free speech, the West’s cowardice, and the rising power of global tyranny. If America and its allies don’t fight back with real action, not just statements then more voices like Jimmy Lai’s will disappear into prison cells while the world scrolls past.
