Hakeem Jeffries Refuses to Endorse Mamdani for NYC Mayor

Top Democrat distances himself from radical socialist candidate with history of anti-Israel rhetoric and extremist views.

As the New York City mayoral race heats up, one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent figures is still refusing to endorse his own party’s nominee and for good reason.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) declined once again on Sunday to back Zohran Mamdani, the far-left socialist who has made headlines for extremist policy views, open hostility toward Israel, and a platform that aligns more with radical activism than public service.

Pressed by ABC’s Jonathan Karl on This Week, Jeffries confirmed he hadn’t endorsed Mamdani and dodged multiple opportunities to explain why.

“I have not,” Jeffries stated, confirming his refusal to support the nominee.

Instead of giving a straight answer, Jeffries hid behind vague political language, saying he wanted to have a “conversation” with Mamdani before early voting begins. But this isn’t the first time he’s used that excuse and time is quickly running out.

So what’s really behind Jeffries’ hesitation? The truth is unavoidable:

  • Mamdani is a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, with deep ties to the same radical left-wing movement that brought you AOC and the Squad.

  • He has endorsed the anti-Israel BDS movement, which many view as a front for anti-Semitic boycotts.

  • Mamdani once claimed he would have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested if he visited New York City.

  • He has refused to walk back the use of terms like “Globalize the Intifada,” a phrase widely seen as a call for violent uprising.

Even Jeffries who leads a party increasingly defined by its far-left fringe seems to know that Mamdani is political poison, especially in a city already plagued by rising antisemitism, out-of-control crime, and socialist policy failures.

Jeffries represents a Brooklyn-based district that is 11% Jewish, and he’s come under increasing pressure from his own constituents to take a stand. When finally forced to address the issue, Jeffries admitted:

“With respect to the Jewish communities that I represent, I think our nominee is going to have to convince folks that he is prepared to aggressively address the rise in antisemitism in the city of New York.”

That’s putting it mildly.

The fact that the Democratic Party’s own leader in the House can’t endorse its nominee for mayor of America’s largest city speaks volumes about the civil war happening inside the party. The radical wing continues to gain power, but even party elites are beginning to recognize the political cost of aligning with it.

If this is the direction the Democratic Party is headed defending violent slogans, demonizing allies like Israel, and propping up anti-police Marxists then it’s no surprise voters are turning to sanity elsewhere.

New Yorkers deserve better than a socialist who wants to arrest world leaders, divide communities, and glorify uprisings. And Hakeem Jeffries knows it.
