JD Vance Laughs Off Trophy Fumble at Ohio State Event

The vice president’s playful mishap at the White House goes viral during Buckeyes’ championship celebration.

Vice President JD Vance may be used to handling pressure, but even he couldn’t hold on to the Ohio State trophy without a little drama.

During a White House ceremony celebrating the Buckeyes’ 2025 National Championship win their first under the newly expanded 12-team playoff format Vance, a proud Ohio State alum, found himself at the center of an unexpected fumble. As the team gathered to pose for photos, Vance reached to lift the national championship trophy. What happened next quickly lit up social media.

The trophy a two-piece design with a gold upper section and black base separated as Vance lifted it, prompting a brief scramble. Star running back TreVeyon Henderson and linebacker Cody Simon jumped in and saved the day, catching both pieces before they hit the ground.

The trophy wasn’t actually broken, of course it was just temporarily disassembled. But the moment offered a light-hearted break from the usual pomp of D.C. politics.

The vice president also poked fun at an attendee who dared to wear a Michigan hat to the Buckeyes celebration. “I don’t know who let the guy over in the corner here in a Michigan hat into this celebration but I’m about to tell the Secret Service you’ve got a dangerous weapon, sir,” Vance joked, drawing laughter from the team and audience.

The event marked a significant day for both football fans and the nation. The Buckeyes clinched their championship on January 20, 2025, the same day Donald J. Trump was inaugurated for his second term a moment President Trump was quick to note during the ceremony.

“Turns out January 20 was a big day for all of us,” he said, as he received a custom Ohio State jersey with the number 47, signifying his presidency.

Ohio State beat Notre Dame 34-23, capturing their first national title since 2014.

This was the inaugural championship under the new 12-team playoff format, bringing a new level of excitement to college football.

The team’s visit to the White House was a reminder of the tight bond between sports, school pride, and patriotic spirit especially under an administration that actually honors American traditions.

JD Vance may have briefly fumbled a trophy, but he handled it with the kind of humor and humility we rarely see in Washington. Compared to the robotic photo-ops we endured under the last administration, this was a refreshing, all-American moment genuine, unscripted, and a reminder of what leadership can look like when it’s not afraid to laugh at itself.
