Israeli Gymnastics Team Halts Training As Iranian Missiles Rain Down

Following Tehran’s counterattack, one of Israel’s premier Olympic programs moves between bomb shelters as airspace shuts down.

As Iranian missiles streak across Israeli skies, even the nation’s top athletes are taking cover.

Israel’s national gymnastics team has suspended all training and team activities following Iran’s counterattack, which came after a joint U.S.-Israeli strike eliminated Iran’s Supreme Leader and several senior military figures.

The confirmed that the escalating violence has forced “unavoidable disruptions” to the team’s schedule at the very start of the international competition season.

“At this time, all training activities have been temporarily suspended,” the federation said, citing safety concerns and the closure of Israeli airspace.

The suspension comes just days after Israeli star captured gold in floor exercise at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Germany another milestone for a program widely regarded as one of Israel’s strongest Olympic disciplines alongside judo and sailing.

Now, instead of preparing for international competitions, gymnasts are reportedly moving between bomb shelters as missile sirens sound.

A source within the team said athletes have been repeatedly seeking cover since the Iranian barrages began.

Israel’s air defense systems, including the Iron Dome, have intercepted many incoming projectiles, but not all. Iranian strikes over the weekend killed at least eight Israelis in the city of Beit Shemesh, with additional casualties reported in other areas.

For elite athletes whose training schedules are meticulously planned months in advance, even short disruptions can have lasting competitive consequences. The closure of Ben Gurion Airport and suspension of commercial flights further complicate any potential travel to overseas competitions.

The security situation has prompted action from which directed all U.S. government employees and their families to shelter in place.

The embassy also announced it would close temporarily and acknowledged it is not currently in a position to evacuate Americans from Israel. Nonessential personnel had already been authorized to depart ahead of the escalation.

Roughly 700,000 American citizens reside in Israel or travel there annually, underscoring the scale of concern when regional conflict intensifies.

The missile attacks followed Operation Epic Fury, the coordinated U.S.-Israeli strike that killed and several top Iranian leaders, including the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Iran has responded with missile and drone strikes aimed at Israeli cities and U.S. military installations in the region. The escalation has pushed the Middle East to one of its most dangerous flashpoints in decades.

Israel, a nation of roughly 9.7 million people, is accustomed to living under periodic rocket fire. Yet the scale and intensity of the latest barrages have disrupted civilian life nationwide from schools and businesses to elite sports programs.

For the gymnasts, the immediate priority is safety, not medals.

“We sincerely hope for safer and calmer days ahead,” the federation said, expressing a desire to return to focusing solely on sport.

Until then, one of Israel’s most celebrated Olympic programs remains sidelined a stark reminder that in times of war, even the brightest stages of international competition can go dark.
