Israel’s Secret Operation to Plant Booby-Trapped Pagers and Walkie-Talkies in Hezbollah Exposed
Mossad's covert operation with booby-trapped pagers deals a devastating blow to Iran-backed militants.
New details have emerged about Mossad's years-long operation that culminated in thousands of Hezbollah terrorists being killed or injured by booby-trapped pagers. The Israeli intelligence service, known for confronting foreign threats, orchestrated this covert mission in Lebanon and Syria, dealing a crushing blow to the Iran-backed terrorist organization.
According to reports from Israeli, Arab, and U.S. security officials, Mossad began preparing this operation in 2015. Initially, Israel sold Hezbollah walkie-talkies rigged with undetectable explosives and equipped with a transmission system that allowed Israel full access to the group’s communications. But in 2024, Mossad upped the ante with a new trap booby-trapped pagers.
Hezbollah, known for its paranoia about Israeli infiltration, refused to purchase any communications devices from Israel, the U.S., or their allies. To bypass this suspicion, Mossad covertly arranged for Hezbollah to buy Apollo pagers, a rugged model made by a Taiwanese company. The pagers were sold by a Middle East-based saleswoman trusted by Hezbollah, who was unaware of Mossad's involvement in the plot.
The pagers, specifically the AR924 model, had numerous features that impressed Hezbollah. These included durability for battlefield conditions, long-lasting batteries, waterproofing, and encryption that appeared to protect against Israeli surveillance. Hezbollah bought 5,000 of these devices and began distributing them to mid-level operatives in early 2024.
Unbeknownst to Hezbollah, the pagers had been secretly manufactured by Mossad in Israel, with the explosives so well-hidden they were undetectable, even by X-ray or disassembly. One key feature involved the encryption, which required users to press buttons with both hands simultaneously to read messages a trap built into the device.
On September 17, Mossad initiated the final phase of the operation. First, they sent an encrypted message to the pagers. Hezbollah terrorists, attempting to read the message, had to press the buttons with both hands, triggering explosions that blew off their fingers and hands, rendering them useless in combat.
Moments later, Mossad detonated all remaining pagers remotely, targeting those who hadn’t yet activated the devices. The result? Devastating explosions in the terrorists' pant pockets, leaving hundreds more maimed or killed. In total, approximately 3,000 Hezbollah operatives were killed or severely injured by the exploding pagers.
The aftermath was swift. Hezbollah, panicked by the devastating losses, immediately switched back to walkie-talkies only to fall victim to Israel’s earlier ploy. The walkie-talkies, sold to Hezbollah nearly a decade prior, carried even larger explosive charges. Mossad detonated them shortly after, causing massive explosions that destroyed cars and buildings, taking out even more of the group's personnel.
Israel’s bold operation, years in the making, crippled Hezbollah’s operational capabilities and dealt a major blow to Iran's influence in the region. Mossad’s ingenuity and relentless pursuit of its enemies serve as a stark reminder that Israel remains ever-vigilant in defending its security.
