Deadly Attacks on Religious Sites in Russia by Islamic Terrorists
Coordinated Assaults in Dagestan Leave Over 15 Dead, Including Police Officers and Civilians.
In a horrifying series of coordinated attacks, Islamic terrorists targeted churches and synagogues in Russia's Dagestan province on Sunday, resulting in multiple fatalities. The assaults left at least 15 police officers and several civilians dead in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala, a region known for its history of Islamic terrorism.
The Israeli government provided the most detailed information about the incidents, noting significant damage and loss of life. According to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
Derbent Synagogue: The synagogue was set on fire and burned to the ground, resulting in the deaths of local guards.
Makhachkala Synagogue: The synagogue was attacked by gunfire, although no further details have been released.
Church Attacks: Churches in Makhachkala were attacked, and a priest in Derbent was brutally murdered, having his throat slit by the terrorists.
The attacks happened in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region that has long been a hotbed for extremist activities. Videos circulating online showed terrorists shooting at civilians and burning down a synagogue, underscoring the brutality of these attacks.
Police and Civilian Casualties: The terrorists killed at least 15 police officers and several civilians. The swift response by security forces led to the deaths of at least six terrorists.
Terrorism Investigation: The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has opened a terrorism investigation, promising to uncover all details and hold those responsible accountable.
These attacks follow a deadly year in Russia, marked by a previous large-scale terrorist attack in Moscow where over 140 people were killed at a concert hall. The frequency and severity of these attacks highlight a growing security challenge for Russian authorities.
Shamil Khadulaev, Chairman of the Dagestan Public Monitoring Commission, revealed that other priests had barricaded themselves in churches, waiting for help as the attacks unfolded. The Israeli embassy in Moscow has been in contact with Jewish community leaders in the area, ensuring their safety and providing necessary support.
As Russia grapples with these heinous acts of terrorism, the international community watches closely. The need for stringent security measures and international cooperation against terrorism has never been more evident.
