Iraq War Vet's 2006 Allegations: Tim Walz Didn't Serve, Left Soldiers Behind

Walz Faces Scrutiny Over Military Record as Vice Presidential Candidate.

As Tim Walz emerges as a key figure in the 2024 Democratic ticket as the vice-presidential candidate, his past military service record has come under intense scrutiny. A Minnesota military reservist who served in Iraq has openly criticized Walz for allegedly misrepresenting his service history, accusing him of misleading the public about his involvement in combat zones.

In a 2006 letter published in the Winona Daily News, Iraq War veteran Tom Hagen accused Walz of leaving the impression that he served in Iraq, when in fact his military service was in Italy. "There is a significant difference between Walz’s garrison service in Italy and the extreme danger young men and women are facing in the combat zones of Iraq and Afghanistan," Hagen wrote. Hagen also expressed concern that Walz retired shortly after learning his unit was being deployed to Iraq, saying, "For Tim Walz to abandon his fellow soldiers and quit when they needed experienced leadership is most disheartening."

Key Allegations:

  • Walz allegedly gave the impression of serving in Iraq, despite being stationed in Italy.

  • He retired from military service upon learning his unit was to be deployed to Iraq.

  • Hagen, a twice-deployed Iraq veteran, views Walz's actions as dishonoring those who served in combat.

Walz responded to these allegations in a letter to the Daily News, suggesting that Hagen's attack was politically motivated and lacked "honor." He asserted, "There's a code of honor among those who’ve served, and normally this type of partisan political attack only comes from one who’s never worn a uniform."

Despite Walz's attempts to clarify his military background, his record has been a topic of debate, especially as he runs alongside Kamala Harris. Since joining the Democratic ticket, veterans and media fact-checkers, including CNN, have debunked claims made by Walz and his supporters that he saw active duty during his time with the Minnesota National Guard. These assertions were further propagated during his 2018 gubernatorial campaign, where he portrayed himself as a "citizen soldier" who "honed leadership in uniform."

Harris's decision to select Walz as her running mate has drawn criticism from political opponents, who are comparing this controversy to the 2004 presidential campaign where Democratic nominee John Kerry faced backlash over his military record. Senior Trump campaign advisor Chris LaCivita, who played a role in exposing Kerry's record, sees parallels between the two situations.

Political Implications:

  • Harris's choice of Walz could alienate blue-collar, moderate voters if doubts about his military record persist.

  • The controversy opens the door for Republican attacks reminiscent of the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth campaign against John Kerry in 2004.

As the election approaches, Walz's military record will likely remain a focal point of criticism. With accusations of misleading the public and abandoning fellow soldiers, the Democratic ticket may struggle to maintain trust among veterans and military families. This issue underscores the importance of transparency and integrity, especially regarding service to one's country.
