Iran Allegedly Behind U.S. Protests Against Israel

DNI Haines exposes Iran's influence on American soil amid Gaza conflict.

Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines revealed on Tuesday that Iran has been actively involved in inciting protests on U.S. soil in response to Israel’s conflict with Hamas, which escalated following the October 7 massacre by the terrorist group.

During congressional testimony earlier this year, Haines warned about Iran’s growing aggressiveness in foreign influence operations aimed at undermining U.S. democratic institutions. She highlighted that Iran, the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism, employs cyber and influence campaigns to execute its malign activities.

  • Exploiting Protests: Haines noted that in recent weeks, Iranian government actors have opportunistically exploited ongoing protests about the Gaza conflict, using familiar tactics to fuel discord. These actors, posing as activists online, have sought to encourage protests and even provided financial support to demonstrators.

  • Manipulation of Public Sentiment: While many Americans are genuinely expressing their views on the Gaza conflict, Haines pointed out that foreign actors, including those linked to Iran, are manipulating these protests for their own ends. Some law enforcement agencies have identified professional agitators involved in stirring up campus protests earlier this year.

  • Warning to Americans: Haines emphasized the importance of free speech in a democracy but also urged Americans to be vigilant. She warned that Americans participating in protests might unknowingly be interacting with or receiving support from foreign government actors, particularly Iran. The DNI urged caution when engaging online with unfamiliar accounts and actors.

Iran's involvement in these protests underscores the broader threat posed by foreign influence operations aimed at destabilizing U.S. society. As Haines articulated, awareness and vigilance are crucial in countering these efforts and preserving the integrity of democratic institutions.
