Iranian President Denies Multiple Assassination Attempts on Trump
Tehran’s claims of innocence unravel in the face of damning U.S. indictments.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian made headlines this week with his dubious claim that his regime “never” attempted to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. Speaking to NBC News in Tehran, Pezeshkian dismissed allegations of plotting against Trump as "schemes designed to promote Iranophobia."
However, these statements are flatly contradicted by U.S. federal investigations and indictments that detail at least two thwarted Iranian plots to kill Trump. The Department of Justice unsealed charges last year against Iranian operatives, revealing an elaborate assassination scheme orchestrated by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a designated terrorist organization.
Federal authorities have long regarded Iran as a leading threat to U.S. security. Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed this, stating that Iran's regime "poses a grave threat" to Americans. Last year, the DOJ charged Farhad Shakeri, an IRGC asset, for coordinating assassination plots against Trump and other U.S. targets, including an Iranian dissident and Jewish Americans. Shakeri remains at large in Iran, facing charges of murder-for-hire, material support for terrorism, and money laundering. If convicted, he faces up to 100 years in prison.
According to court documents, Shakeri used a network of U.S.-based criminals to execute these plans. In October 2024, the IRGC instructed him to finalize a plan to kill Trump. When logistical challenges delayed the operation, the regime decided to pause and "resume" after the U.S. elections, betting that Trump would lose and become an easier target.
Shakeri's plot wasn’t the only alarming revelation. Another attempt involved Pakistani national Asif Merchant, who allegedly came to the U.S. on instructions from Tehran. Posing as a criminal operative, Merchant discussed assassinating a U.S. politician, later identified as Trump. Federal authorities arrested Merchant in July 2024, intercepting his plan just as he was set to leave the country.
Merchant reportedly paid undercover agents $5,000 to finalize the operation. His recorded conversations showed explicit intentions to carry out Tehran’s orders.
The IRGC’s activities go beyond Trump. FBI Director Christopher Wray warned about Iran’s broader agenda: targeting dissidents, Jewish Americans, and other perceived enemies of the regime. “The IRGC’s brazen attempts to gun down Americans on U.S. soil will not be tolerated,” Wray asserted.
Despite these damning reports, Iran continues to deny responsibility, deflecting blame onto foreign powers. Meanwhile, the Biden administration’s lack of decisive action against Tehran has emboldened the regime, highlighting the urgent need for stronger leadership in Washington.
Iran’s actions underscore the dangerous reality of its unchecked aggression. The safety of American citizens depends on leaders who prioritize national security and refuse to appease hostile regimes.
