Indiana Senate Defies Trump and Kills GOP-Boosting Redistricting Plan
Despite Republican control, state senators reject a Trump-backed map that could have flipped two seats and secured the House in 2026.

In a stunning rejection of both strategic sense and party loyalty, the Indiana State Senate controlled by Republicans voted down a Trump-endorsed redistricting proposal that could have delivered two crucial House seats to the GOP in the 2026 midterms.
The vote wasn’t even close. On Tuesday, the state Senate rejected the plan 19-31, dealing a significant blow to Republican efforts to secure a lasting House majority and infuriating President Donald Trump, who had personally championed the redistricting push.
“If Republicans will not do what is necessary to save our Country, they will eventually lose everything to the Democrats,” Trump warned before the vote. Afterward, he promised that RINOs like Senate leader Rod Bray would face “MAGA primaries” and would “not be in Politics for long.”
The failed proposal had already passed the Indiana House 57-41 and followed the lead of red states like Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina, all of which redrew their maps to increase Republican gains. Had Indiana done the same, it would have likely flipped two Democrat-held districts, providing a decisive edge in what is expected to be a tight 2026 congressional battle.
Currently, Republicans hold 220 seats in the U.S. House, with Democrats at 213 and two seats vacant. With margins that razor-thin, every district counts and this decision by Indiana Republicans could cost the GOP the majority.
Trump and Vice President JD Vance accused Bray of sabotaging the effort behind the scenes, saying he told the White House he wouldn’t oppose it while quietly whipping votes against it. Bray denied it, claiming he lets members vote freely but that didn’t sit well with conservative leaders who understand what’s at stake.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun called for a special session to revisit the issue, but Bray quickly shut that down too, declaring:
“There are not enough votes to move that idea forward, and the Senate will not reconvene in December.”
This isn’t just political cowardice. It’s strategic negligence.

And while Democrats continue to manipulate the process in blue states California recently passed Prop. 50, creating five new Democrat-leaning districts some Republicans are still playing by a rulebook the Left discarded long ago.
“The Democrats have done redistricting for years, often illegally... and all other appropriate Republican states have done it,” Trump noted.
Indeed, Texas was just cleared by the Supreme Court to implement a map with five new GOP-friendly districts. Meanwhile, Florida, Virginia, and Louisiana are all navigating similar fights. The GOP has made gains, but Indiana just gave Democrats a win they didn’t even have to fight for.
This vote proves once again: Republican majorities mean nothing if weak leaders refuse to lead. Rod Bray and the 31 senators who voted against their own party’s interests should be held accountable by the voters who sent them to office expecting results not excuses.
