Dutch Imam Suspended After Meeting Israeli President
European Muslim leaders defy extremism, only to face backlash from their own communities.

A bold act of peace was met with swift punishment this week when Imam Youssef Masbeh of the Bilal Mosque in Alkmaar, Netherlands, was suspended less than 24 hours after joining a delegation of European Muslim imams in meeting Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem.
The delegation, which included more than a dozen imams from France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the U.K., traveled to Israel in a rare and courageous move to promote interfaith dialogue, peace, and opposition to terrorism. But apparently, not everyone in the Muslim world shares those values.
Imam Hassen Chalghoumi, a longtime advocate for peace and chairman of the Conference of Imams of France, led the delegation. In their meeting with President Herzog, the imams offered prayers for the Israeli hostages taken by Hamas on October 7 and openly condemned terrorism and the actions of both Hamas and Iran. Their message was clear: Muslims and Jews can and must stand together against hatred.
Key moments from the historic visit:
Imam Masbeh sang a version of Israel’s national anthem, HaTikvah, in Arabic, praising Herzog and expressing hope for peace.
The group praised Israel’s right to defend itself and its democratic resilience in the face of terror.
President Herzog embraced the delegation and reiterated Israel’s desire for peace with its neighbors, including Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and hopefully Saudi Arabia.
Yet, within a day of this powerful act of unity, Masbeh’s own mosque cut ties. In an Instagram post, the mosque board declared, “Following recent political statements by the imam, the board has decided to suspend him with immediate effect.” The message made clear that Masbeh’s support for peace with Israel was unacceptable to the leadership of the mosque.
This isn’t just about one imam in the Netherlands. It’s about the broader struggle within Islam over whether to pursue peace or continue to tolerate extremism. Imam Masbeh dared to praise Israel’s president, to sing words of hope, and to denounce terror. For that, he was cast out.
It’s the same twisted logic that has allowed anti-Semitism to flourish in Europe’s Islamic enclaves while voices of moderation are silenced. And it’s the same mindset the global left refuses to challenge often out of fear or political correctness.
Meanwhile, President Herzog emphasized coexistence, reminding the group that Jewish and Arab doctors worked side by side treating victims after the October 7 Hamas massacre. “We are all children of Abraham,” Herzog told them. But clearly, not everyone wants to live like it.
The suspension of Imam Masbeh shows how even modest steps toward peace and understanding can provoke harsh backlash from those clinging to hate. The question now is whether more moderate leaders will rise to push back or continue allowing extremism to define the conversation.
