Ilhan Omar Survives Primary Challenge Amid Losses for Other ‘Squad’ Members

Despite Losses in the Squad, Omar Secures Democratic Nomination with Comfortable Margin.

Far-left Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) successfully fended off a primary challenge on Tuesday, securing the Democratic nomination for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District. Omar’s victory comes after a more contentious race in 2022, where she narrowly escaped defeat.

Omar won the primary with 56% of the vote against challenger Don Samuels, who garnered 42.9%. Samuels nearly unseated Omar two years ago, losing by just 2,500 votes. This time, Omar’s margin of victory was more comfortable, solidifying her position despite earlier concerns that she might follow in the footsteps of her fellow “Squad” members, who suffered significant primary losses earlier this year.

In her victory statement on X, Omar framed her win as a triumph over “special interests” and a victory for the progressive movement. “Whether it’s universal school meals, student debt cancellation, climate action, or a just foreign policy that reflects our values – the Fifth District showed tonight that we want to drive the nation toward a better future,” Omar declared. She pledged to continue fighting for a range of progressive causes, from reproductive healthcare to ending what she called the “genocide in Gaza.”

Key Factors in Omar’s Victory:

  • Fundraising Advantage: Omar significantly outpaced Samuels in fundraising, bringing in approximately $6.2 million compared to his $1.4 million.

  • Polling Lead: Pre-election polls indicated a strong lead for Omar, with one July poll showing her ahead by 27 points.

  • Criticism and Controversy: Omar, along with other “Squad” members, has faced sharp criticism for her anti-Israel stance. However, unlike in other races, the United Democracy Project, a super PAC associated with AIPAC, did not target Omar in this election cycle.

Earlier this year, Omar’s fellow “Squad” members, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), lost their primaries, raising questions about the future of this progressive group in Congress. Both Bowman and Bush were heavily targeted by pro-Israel groups, a factor that did not play out in Omar’s race this time around.

With her primary victory secured, Omar’s attention now turns to supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. Omar has praised Harris’s choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, citing his progressive stances on issues like marijuana legalization and reproductive rights.
