Red State Governor Enacts Executive Order to Combat Illegal Voting
Idaho's Governor Little Takes a Stand Against Non-Citizen Voting Amid Border Crisis.
Idaho Governor Brad Little (R) signed an executive order on Tuesday called the "Only Citizens Will Vote" Act, aimed at preventing non-citizens from voting in state elections. This decisive action comes amid a surge in illegal immigration at the southern border and concerns over election integrity.
The order directs Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane to monitor county voter rolls and prevent non-citizens from voting.
Governor Little emphasized the importance of maintaining secure elections as a key priority for Idaho.
Secretary McGrane has been tasked with coordinating with state and federal agencies to verify citizenship status and ensure the integrity of voter registration.
Governor Little expressed his commitment to safeguarding Idaho's elections from the consequences of what he described as President Biden's "lawless open border" policies. "My executive order – the ONLY CITIZENS WILL VOTE Act – directs Secretary of State Phil McGrane to work with local county clerks to scrub our voter rolls and make sure Idaho’s elections do not fall prey to the consequences of Biden’s lawless open border," Little said in his statement.
Secretary McGrane praised the order, stating, "Across Idaho’s 44 counties, we have excellent mechanisms in place already to ensure non-citizens do not vote in Idaho, but there is always more we can do to make sure only citizens will vote."
As part of the order, McGrane will regularly review Idaho’s voter rolls in collaboration with the Idaho State Police and the Idaho Transportation Department. He will also work with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to take necessary steps to verify citizenship status. Additionally, the state will not provide voter registration materials to non-citizens or coordinate with any federal programs that do so.
On the federal level, Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) is pushing for the "Safeguard American Voter Eligibility" (SAVE) Act, which aims to enforce the prohibition of non-citizens voting in federal elections. "Federal law currently PROHIBITS states from verifying citizenship status during registration for federal elections," Roy noted on X this week. "The SAVE Act requires proof of citizenship to register and would remove non-citizens from voter rolls. What are Democrats fearful of? This is basic stuff, you would think…"
Roy's statement argued that Democrats are opposed to secure elections and are using open border policies to undermine election integrity. "Secure elections are a key cornerstone for any representative government; without them, we won’t have a country," he said. "Radical progressive Democrats know this and are using open border policies while also attacking election integrity laws to fundamentally remake America."
Despite the clear need for such measures, President Joe Biden has strongly opposed the bill. "It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in Federal elections — it is a Federal crime punishable by prison and fines," the administration stated. "The alleged justification for this bill is based on easily disproven falsehoods."
Ensuring the integrity of our elections is paramount to maintaining a functioning democracy. Governor Little's executive order and Rep. Roy's legislative efforts are critical steps in protecting our electoral process from potential abuses.
