Special Counsel David Weiss Asserts No One Above the Law After Hunter Biden Convicted

Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison following felony gun convictions.

Special Counsel David Weiss emphasized that "no one is above the law" following the felony convictions of Hunter Biden on Tuesday. Jurors found Biden, 54, guilty on all three counts: lying to a federally licensed firearms dealer, making false claims on a federal firearms background check form, and possessing an illegally obtained firearm. These convictions could result in up to 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.

Weiss addressed the media at a press conference, highlighting the key themes of the prosecution. "Earlier today, Hunter Biden was convicted of two counts of lying on a form submitted to a federal firearms dealer about his addiction, or use of crack cocaine, and possessing a firearm while a user or addict," Weiss explained. "This case was about the illegal choices [the] defendant made while in the throes of addiction."

He continued, "While there has been much testimony about the defendant’s abuse of drugs and alcohol, ultimately, this case was not just about addiction. It was these choices and the combination of guns and drugs that made his conduct dangerous."

Weiss reiterated that the principle of accountability applies to everyone. "No one in this country is above the law. Everyone must be accountable for their actions, even this defendant. However, Hunter Biden should be no more accountable than any other citizen convicted of this same conduct."

Weiss confirmed that investigations into Hunter Biden are ongoing, with "additional trials and investigative work to be done." These investigations include criminal charges in California related to alleged tax violations and a referral from House Republicans recommending charges for lying to Congress.

Investigative reporter Catherine Herridge noted that federal investigators are examining potential Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) violations. "Backbone of special counsel gun case was Hunter Biden’s laptop user data," Herridge posted on X. "Pending CA tax case poses significant, potential legal jeopardy for Hunter + immediate family, calls him a ‘lobbyist’. References to Ukraine, China strongly suggest investigators exploring potential FARA violations."

As the legal troubles for Hunter Biden continue to unfold, the commitment to upholding the rule of law remains paramount. This case underscores the necessity of accountability and transparency in the justice system.
