Arizona Governor Vetoes Bill Blocking CCP Land Buys Near Military Bases
Katie Hobbs blasted for rejecting bipartisan national security bill amid rising Chinese attempts to acquire land near critical U.S. assets.

Arizona’s Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs just sent a loud message to Beijing and Americans aren’t happy about it.
This week, Hobbs vetoed a bipartisan bill designed to stop Communist China from buying land near key U.S. military and energy infrastructure. The move sparked immediate backlash from state and national security leaders, with some calling it "insane" and "a total disgrace."
The bill in question, S.B. 1109, would have prohibited entities linked to the Chinese Communist Party from owning more than 30% of any Arizona property, especially near sites like Luke Air Force Base, the Palo Verde nuclear power plant, and Taiwan Semiconductor's major chip fabrication facilities.
Governor Hobbs claimed the legislation was “ineffective at counter-espionage” and risked “arbitrary enforcement” a weak excuse considering the bill had already been amended to avoid discrimination concerns and had bipartisan support.
Arizona State Senate Majority Leader Janae Shamp ripped the veto, calling Hobbs “an obstructionist against safeguarding our citizens from threats.”
Here’s what Hobbs just vetoed:
A law to block CCP-linked entities from purchasing land near military and tech infrastructure.
A bipartisan bill that went through amendments to ensure clarity and fairness in enforcement.
A policy modeled on successful efforts in 22 other states that have passed similar restrictions.
Michael Lucci, head of the national security advocacy group State Armor Action, said Hobbs had essentially hung an “Open for the CCP” sign on Arizona’s front door. He noted that Chinese efforts to acquire land near Luke AFB are already underway and warned of the asymmetric threat such proximity poses.
“Proximity produces peril,” Lucci said, citing Ukraine’s successful drone attacks on Russian assets as a reminder of how vulnerable strategic sites can become.
This isn’t fearmongering It’s a pattern:
In Texas, a CCP-linked former Chinese military officer attempted to build a wind farm near Laughlin Air Force Base.
In North Dakota, Chinese companies tried to set up a corn mill just miles from Grand Forks AFB.
And now, in Arizona, Democrats are actively blocking laws meant to prevent the same national security risks from repeating.
Governor Hobbs didn’t just veto a bill she vetoed a commonsense measure to protect American farmland, infrastructure, and defense readiness. All while pretending the CCP’s infiltration strategy isn’t real, despite mounting evidence.
This is no longer about partisanship it’s about whether our leaders have the spine to defend U.S. sovereignty against foreign aggression. While Congress is considering seven federal bills on this exact issue and 27 states are debating 84 more, Hobbs decided to side with “business as usual.”
Arizona’s legislature may yet override the veto. If they don’t, the people of Arizona and the rest of the nation will need to ask: What exactly is Governor Hobbs protecting, and who is she protecting it for?
