Clinton Faces Backlash Over Claim GOP Bill Endangers Voting Access for Married Women

Republicans debunk her attack as the SAVE Act advances to secure U.S. elections from noncitizen voting.

Hillary Clinton is once again in the spotlight not for leadership or clarity, but for spreading misleading claims about a Republican-backed bill aimed at protecting the integrity of U.S. elections. On Thursday, the failed 2016 presidential candidate was widely ridiculed after asserting that the SAVE Act recently passed by the House would block millions of married women from voting.

Clinton declared that the bill “threatens voting access for millions of Americans, including 69 million women whose married names don’t match their birth certificates.” But that narrative quickly fell apart.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), does one thing: require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. It also helps states identify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls something an overwhelming majority of Americans support.

Here’s what the bill actually does:

  • Requires one form of government-issued ID such as a passport or driver’s license to prove citizenship.

  • Directs states to establish a clear process for handling name discrepancies, like those from marriage or divorce.

  • Makes allowances for those who lack documents by permitting alternative forms of evidence to verify citizenship.

Republicans wasted no time calling Clinton out for her blatant misinformation.

“Stop. You are lying. Read the bill. And for the love of God, stop treating women like they are incapable or idiots,” Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) fired back on X.

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), who introduced the companion bill in the Senate, dismantled Clinton’s claim with logic that’s hard to refute.

“If that were true... the same women would be unemployable as they’d be unable to complete an I-9,” Lee said. “Her argument proves too much, is refuted by the plain text of the bill, and cannot withstand review.”

The truth is simple: the SAVE Act protects legal voters men and women alike from having their votes diluted by illegal ones. Democrats’ hysterical response, including from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who claimed the bill would "disenfranchise 70 million married women," has been thoroughly debunked.

Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) clarified the issue once again:

“The SAVE Act directs states to establish a process for discrepancies, such as a name change, so that individuals can still register to vote.”

Despite the media spin and fearmongering from the left, the SAVE Act passed with bipartisan support four Democrats broke ranks to vote for it because the premise is common sense: only citizens should vote in American elections.

With trust in our electoral system at a low point after years of Democratic games, the SAVE Act is a step toward restoring confidence. Clinton’s baseless panic may rally the far-left, but for everyday Americans, it only underscores how desperate the Democrats are to oppose any measure that makes cheating harder.

Like Rep. Roy said: “Just show an ID. Why would you not want to verify citizenship?”
