Kamala Harris Claims She Won’t Take Guns, But Pushes for ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban
Harris’ rhetoric on gun control signals a deeper agenda to restrict Second Amendment rights.
Vice President Kamala Harris, during a recent interview, attempted to strike a balance between gun ownership and gun control, but her remarks made it clear that her true agenda is far from supportive of the Second Amendment. Harris claimed she would not confiscate Americans’ firearms, yet called for a ban on so-called "assault weapons," a vague term often used to describe popular semi-automatic rifles owned by millions of law-abiding citizens.
“I am a gun owner,” Harris stated during an interview with 6abc Action News. She also noted that her running mate, Tim Walz, is a gun owner. “We’re not taking anybody’s guns away. I support the Second Amendment,” she claimed, while simultaneously pushing for a ban on the very firearms that many Americans use for self-defense and sport shooting.
Harris attempted to justify her position by drawing on her background as a prosecutor, stating she had seen firsthand the effects of gun violence. “I have personally prosecuted homicide cases. I have personally looked at autopsies. I have personally seen what assault weapons do to the human body,” she said, arguing that these firearms were “literally tools of war.”
Harris’ claim that so-called “assault weapons” are "tools of war" is false. Civilian versions of these firearms are not capable of burst or full-auto fire, unlike their military counterparts.
Semi-automatic rifles, like the AR-15, fire one round per trigger pull, which is no different from most handguns, making her characterization misleading.
Banning popular firearms owned by millions of Americans would do little to curb crime, as they are rarely used in gun-related homicides. According to FBI data, more deaths are caused by handguns and even blunt objects than by rifles of any kind.
Harris also expressed support for so-called "universal background checks," even though the vast majority of firearms sold through licensed dealers already require a background check. She misleadingly implied that this wasn’t already the case, despite the extensive checks in place through Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs).
“The majority of NRA members support that,” Harris claimed, without offering any evidence, suggesting that the current system isn’t stringent enough. “You just might want to know before someone can buy a lethal weapon if they’ve been found by a court to be a danger to themselves or others,” she added, failing to mention that such provisions already exist in current law.
Harris’ rhetoric highlights a deeper issue—the ongoing effort to chip away at Americans' Second Amendment rights under the guise of "reasonable" gun safety laws. Her push for an "assault weapons" ban is just the latest example of a broader strategy to impose restrictions that will ultimately disarm law-abiding citizens while doing little to address the root causes of violent crime.
With crime rates rising across the country, especially in cities with strict gun control measures, Americans are increasingly relying on their right to bear arms for personal protection. Harris’ proposals, if enacted, would not only infringe on those rights but would leave countless law-abiding citizens vulnerable.
