Harris Hosts Screening of Documentary Exposing Hamas Sexual Violence

Vice President to Highlight Conflict-Related Sexual Violence with Sheryl Sandberg's Film

Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff are set to host a screening of Sheryl Sandberg’s documentary, “Screams Before Silence,” a powerful 57-minute film detailing the extreme sexual violence committed by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023. The event will take place at the White House, where Harris will also deliver remarks on conflict-related sexual violence worldwide, addressing atrocities in places such as Sudan and the Congo.

The event, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET, will include a partial screening of Sandberg’s film, highlighting the harrowing experiences of the victims. CNN anchor Dana Bash discussed the significance of this screening with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), referencing one of the Israeli women whose story is featured in the documentary.

"Look, Amit’s story should make every human being sick. Sexual violence," Bash said. "We know that Sheryl Sandberg documented those horrific stories so that the world could bear witness, ice out denialism. And yet denialism still exists. How do you combat that?"

Wasserman Schultz responded by emphasizing the importance of shedding light on these heinous acts. "The primary way that we combat it is by doing exactly what you and I are doing here, and that’s making sure that we can shine a spotlight on the sexual and gender-based violence that Hamas perpetrated on its victims on October 7th, and that very likely, we know, are continuing to perpetrate that sexual violence," she said.

She also expressed pride in the Vice President and Second Gentleman for using the White House platform to amplify these critical issues. "Sheryl Sandberg’s film is searing. But I’m really proud of the Vice President and the Second Gentleman for using the White House’s platform to make sure that the world knows that Hamas used sexual violence and continues to use it as a weapon of war, violating women, Israeli women," Wasserman Schultz added.

This screening aims to raise awareness and foster global condemnation of the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, underscoring the need for international solidarity and action against such crimes.
