Harris Campaign Clarifies Position, Says No Fracking Ban Despite Earlier Pledge
Harris's past statements contradict her campaign’s current position on fracking.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign is now asserting that she will not ban fracking if she becomes president this fall, despite her previous pledges to do exactly that during her 2020 presidential campaign.
“She wants no fracking,” former President Donald Trump told supporters at a rally in North Carolina this week. “You’re going to be paying a lot of money. You’re going to be paying so much. You’re going to say ‘bring back Trump.’”
In response to Trump’s remarks, the Harris campaign stated: “Trump’s false claims about fracking bans are an obvious attempt to distract from his own plans to enrich oil and gas executives at the expense of the middle class.”
However, Harris’s stance on fracking has been clear in the past. As a U.S. Senator from California, she was rated as the most far-left Democrat in the Senate and unequivocally stated her opposition to fracking while campaigning for the presidency in 2020.
“There’s no question I’m in favor of banning fracking,” Harris declared at a CNN town hall event in 2019. “And starting with what we can do on day one around public lands, and there has to be legislation. That’s something I’ve taken on in California. I have a history of working on this issue, and to your point, we have to just acknowledge that the residual impact of fracking is enormous in terms of the health and safety of communities.”
Additionally, during a 2019 appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show, Harris labeled climate change as the “single greatest threat” facing the world and committed to passing the Green New Deal, emphasizing her intention to end fracking “once and for all.”
The stark contradiction between Harris's past statements and her current campaign position raises questions about her commitment to her previous promises and the credibility of her campaign’s claims.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the inconsistency in Harris’s stance on fracking will likely be a significant point of contention, influencing voters who are concerned about energy policy and environmental issues.
