Graham Discusses Trump's Potential VP Picks, Including an Unexpected Contender
The South Carolina senator suggests a surprise candidate who could significantly impact the 2024 race.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) speculated on several potential candidates for President Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate during an interview over the weekend, including a dark horse contender who has received little attention so far.
Graham shared his insights during a Sunday interview on CBS News' “Face The Nation” when asked about who Trump might choose in the coming days.
Key points to consider:
Graham expressed support for Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), highlighting his ability to expand the electoral map.
He mentioned other potential picks, including North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).
Graham introduced Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin as a surprising yet strategic choice for Trump’s VP.
When asked if Trump has already made a decision, Graham responded, “I don’t think he’s decided. I’m a big Tim Scott fan because I want to expand the map.” He emphasized the importance of selecting a running mate who could add value and broaden the appeal in 2024.
Graham voiced concerns about the current administration, suggesting that President Biden might be replaced and noting Vice President Kamala Harris's alignment with policies similar to Bernie Sanders. “If I were President Trump, I would make sure I pick somebody that could add value in 2024, expand the map, take – prosecute the case against the liberals who occupy the White House,” Graham said.
Discussing alternatives to Tim Scott, Graham mentioned three notable figures: Doug Burgum, J.D. Vance, and Marco Rubio. “Burgum, solid as a rock in North Dakota. J.D. Vance would be – is aligned with President Trump in many ways. He could be a good wingman. Can he expand the map?” he queried. Regarding Rubio, Graham praised him as a “very articulate conservative” who could significantly aid Trump, particularly in Florida.
However, Graham’s most intriguing suggestion was Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Somebody’s not being talked about that should be, in my view, is Youngkin from Virginia. If we win Virginia, we win. It is over,” he stated. He emphasized that a strategic VP pick could carry forward the America First agenda and secure victory in 2024.
Graham concluded by noting the high stakes of the VP selection for both parties, especially if Biden steps down and Harris becomes the nominee. “This is a dramatically different race than it is right now, today. I hope people are thinking about that on our side,” he said.
