GOP Investigator Questions Legitimacy of Biden Family Pardons

Chairman Comer suggests preemptive pardons could be an "admission of guilt" unlikely to withstand legal scrutiny.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) voiced strong doubts on Sunday about the preemptive pardons issued by President Joe Biden to members of his family just moments before leaving office. Speaking on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Comer suggested that the pardons might not hold up in court and criticized the move as an apparent “admission of guilt.”

Biden’s controversial pardons covered his brother, James Biden; James’ wife, Sara; his sister, Valerie Biden Owens; her husband, John T. Owens; and his brother, Francis Biden, citing concerns over "politically motivated investigations." The president had previously pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, following convictions for tax evasion and gun crimes.

Comer, who led the GOP’s impeachment investigation into Biden and authored a book on his findings, was blunt in his assessment. He argued that the pardons were a shield against investigations into influence peddling and corruption linked to the Biden family’s dealings.

"I don’t think these preemptive pardons would hold up in court,” Comer stated. “No jury in America would buy that, in my opinion.”

Comer described the pardons as an attempt to escape accountability, noting that several government agencies, including the IRS, DOJ, FBI, and SEC, had launched investigations into the Bidens but were repeatedly obstructed by “deep state actors.” He emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for the alleged cover-ups accountable under the Trump administration’s new leadership.

With President Trump back in office, Comer expressed confidence in the team of officials appointed to key positions, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

“One thing I’m confident is going to happen and you saw that with John Ratcliffe we’re going to hold people in the government accountable that were involved in the cover-up,” Comer said.

He pointed to Ratcliffe’s work exposing the 51 intelligence officials who falsely claimed that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation. Comer now expects further action against those who allegedly obstructed investigations into the Biden family’s financial dealings.

The pardons have sparked widespread outrage, with critics arguing they epitomize political corruption. Comer underscored the disconnect between the Bidens and the American people, stating, “I don’t think the average person that works hard and pays taxes has much sympathy for a president that, in his last act in office, pardoned his entire family for financial public corruption and didn’t have the guts to tell anybody why he did it.”

As the Trump administration presses forward with investigations, Comer remains hopeful that the Biden family’s actions and any associated cover-ups will face rigorous scrutiny.
