GOP Senator Halts Promotion of General Involved in Afghanistan Withdrawal

Biden-backed nomination faces fierce opposition over catastrophic military failures.

Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma has placed a hold on the promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, blocking his ascension to a key leadership role in the U.S. Army. Donahue, nominated earlier this month by President Joe Biden to become a four-star general, played a significant role in overseeing the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan an event that left 13 American service members dead and billions of dollars in military equipment abandoned to the Taliban.

Mullin, a staunch critic of the Afghanistan withdrawal, has been vocal about its failures and the Biden administration’s lack of accountability. At the time of the withdrawal, Mullin attempted private rescue operations to save stranded Americans but was thwarted by interference from both the Pentagon and State Department. Now, as a senator, he’s using his authority to block Donahue’s promotion, signaling the GOP’s continued discontent with the Biden administration’s handling of military leadership.

The Afghanistan withdrawal in August 2021 will be remembered as one of the most humiliating military debacles in recent history. Key failures include:

  • Thirteen U.S. service members killed in a suicide bombing at Kabul Airport during the chaotic evacuation.

  • Billions of dollars in advanced military equipment abandoned, now in Taliban hands.

  • Thousands of prisoners with terror ties released after U.S. military sites were overtaken.

Despite these glaring failures, President Biden has not held any senior military leaders accountable. Instead, he has doubled down on supporting figures like Donahue, who was infamously aboard the final U.S. military plane leaving Kabul a stark image of America’s hasty and disorganized retreat.

Mullin isn’t alone in his opposition to Biden’s military appointments. Former President Donald Trump has pledged to overhaul the Pentagon, promising to fire any officials involved in the Afghanistan withdrawal should he return to the White House in 2025. Meanwhile, Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama previously delayed hundreds of military promotions in protest of a Pentagon policy funding out-of-state travel for service members seeking abortions.

The Biden administration, along with Pentagon officials, has defended Donahue’s nomination. Pentagon spokesman James Adams called Donahue’s appointment “critical” for the European region, urging the Senate to approve all nominees for the sake of military readiness. But Mullin and other Republicans argue that readiness begins with accountability a principle they see sorely lacking in the current administration.

This nomination fight reflects a broader struggle over military leadership and accountability in the post-Biden era. While the administration pushes forward, Republican leaders remain steadfast in holding officials responsible for failures that have endangered American lives and global standing.

Every American deserves to know that their military leaders are chosen for merit and competence not loyalty to failed policies.
