Georgia Governor Kemp Reacts to Trump's Recent Attacks

Georgia Governor Responds to Former President's Attacks Amidst GOP Tensions.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp recently addressed a series of attacks from former President Donald Trump, urging him to shift focus away from intra-party conflicts and concentrate on defeating Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democrats in upcoming elections. Trump's criticisms of Kemp, his record as governor, and his wife, Marty Kemp, came amid ongoing disputes related to the 2020 presidential election.

Kemp took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to Trump’s attacks, emphasizing the importance of unity within the Republican Party. "My focus is on winning this November and saving our country from Kamala Harris and the Democrats – not engaging in petty personal insults, attacking fellow Republicans, or dwelling on the past,” Kemp stated. “You should do the same, Mr. President, and leave my family out of it,” he added.

Despite the conflict, Kemp has expressed his support for Trump’s presidential campaign, highlighting his belief that Trump would be a better option than current President Joe Biden. "It’s as simple as that," Kemp stated, reaffirming his endorsement.

The reason behind Trump’s recent criticism of Kemp remains unclear, though Kemp’s absence from Trump’s rally in Atlanta on Saturday may have contributed to the tension. Local media reported Kemp had prior commitments that prevented his attendance.

Trump took to social media to criticize Kemp’s handling of crime in Georgia, stating, “Brian Kemp should focus his efforts on fighting Crime, not fighting Unity and the Republican Party! His Crime Rate in Georgia is terrible, his Crime Rate in Atlanta is the worst, and his Economy is average.” While Atlanta's crime rate is notably high, Georgia's overall crime statistics place it near the national average, and the state boasts one of the strongest economies in the country.

Trump also criticized Kemp for allegedly seeking “UNITY, not Retribution,” and accused Kemp of not appreciating his endorsement in the 2018 gubernatorial race. Trump’s support was pivotal in Kemp’s victory over Democrat Stacey Abrams, securing the nomination and winning the election by a narrow margin of 1.4%, or approximately 55,000 votes. In the 2022 rematch against Abrams, Kemp expanded his margin of victory to 7.5%, or 297,899 votes, after defeating Trump-endorsed primary challenger David Perdue.

“He and his wife didn’t think he could win,” Trump continued. “I said, ‘I’m telling you you’re going to win.’ Then he won, he was happy, and his wife said, ‘Thank you, Sir, we’ll never be able to make it up to you!’ Now she says she won’t Endorse me, and is going to ‘write in Brian Kemp’s name.’ Well, I don’t want her Endorsement, and I don’t want his.”

The former president also appeared to hold the Kemps responsible for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ criminal prosecution of Trump and his associates for their alleged actions surrounding the 2020 presidential election, branding Kemp as “a bad guy.”

The clash between Kemp and Trump underscores ongoing tensions within the Republican Party as it seeks to navigate internal divisions and focus on the upcoming elections. Kemp’s call for unity and Trump’s fiery responses highlight the complexities of political alliances and the challenges of maintaining party cohesion in a politically charged environment.
