Florida Residents Outraged as FEMA Workers Allegedly Skip Homes with Trump Flags

Shocking directive sparks backlash and investigations after Hurricane Milton relief effort.

Residents of Lake Placid, Florida, were outraged to learn that federal disaster relief workers bypassed their homes following Hurricane Milton due to displaying Trump flags or signs. Whistleblowers revealed that a FEMA supervisor had instructed relief crews to skip homes openly supporting Trump a directive that reportedly led to at least 20 homes being neglected in the aftermath of the storm.

Angela Wrench, a local resident whose property was hit by tornadoes spun off by the hurricane, said she was horrified to discover her home was skipped. “I think it’s horrible. I think it’s a horrible thing that anybody thought that was OK,” she told WFLA. “We pay our taxes. We have just as much right to that money as anyone. It shouldn’t have anything to do with our political beliefs, none whatsoever.” According to Wrench, FEMA finally arrived at her home a day after the story broke in the news, acknowledging that they were there to “make things right.”

Other residents of Lake Placid shared similar sentiments. Jack Wolfe condemned the decision to withhold assistance based on political beliefs. “It was disappointing. I know that there’s a lot of people with a lot of emotions when it comes to this time of year for election, and I don’t think it should matter how you voted or who you are,” Wolfe said, emphasizing that disaster relief should remain apolitical.

  • Immediate Fallout: FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell announced the termination of the supervisor responsible for the directive, identified as Marn’i Washington. FEMA has since claimed that Washington’s actions were an “isolated incident.” Local leaders, including Congressman Scott Franklin, were quick to denounce the incident. Franklin called the guidance “utterly disgusting” and urged his constituents to contact his office if they faced any similar discrimination.

  • Calls for Accountability and Oversight: As the situation unfolds, Franklin and other officials are demanding a full investigation. “FEMA must conduct a full investigation,” Franklin said, pointing out that similar issues have been reported in other parts of Florida. Highlands County Commissioner Chris Campbell echoed the call, describing the supervisor’s actions as “appalling.” Campbell assured residents that FEMA would visit every home in Lake Placid to ensure all affected residents receive the assistance they need.

  • Federal and State Investigations Underway: Both state and federal investigations have now been launched, with FEMA Administrator Criswell scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on November 19. This incident raises serious questions about the conduct of federal agencies and whether political biases have any place in disaster relief efforts.

The idea that any resident’s political beliefs could prevent them from receiving essential aid has struck a nerve with Americans across the country. For Lake Placid, a town that voted 70% for Trump, this controversy underscores the importance of keeping politics out of essential services. In the words of Angela Wrench, “It’s a horrible thing that anybody thought that was OK.”
