Fired FEMA Employee Claims Avoiding Trump-Supporting Homes is Widespread Policy

FEMA whistleblower says avoiding “politically hostile” homes happens nationwide, calls it a “colossal event of avoidance.”

A recently dismissed FEMA supervisor has alleged that she was not acting alone in directing disaster relief workers to avoid homes displaying Trump signs. In an interview, Marn’i Washington claimed FEMA has an unofficial, yet widely practiced policy of steering clear of “politically hostile” residences a policy she argues is enacted nationwide, not merely in isolated cases.

"This is a colossal event of avoidance," Washington said, refuting FEMA’s assertion that her direction to avoid pro-Trump homes was an isolated decision. According to Washington, FEMA advises employees to avoid homes with political affiliations deemed potentially hostile, rather than engage with residents holding differing political views.

Washington was dismissed after whistleblowers alleged she had directed FEMA teams in Florida to sidestep homes with Trump signage in Highlands County. FEMA responded, stating that Washington's actions were unauthorized, labeling her guidance an isolated incident. Yet Washington maintains this is part of a broader trend within the agency, one she claims is known and condoned by senior leadership.

Washington cited specific examples of hostility reported by FEMA teams, including residents telling agents, "You’re part of the Biden-Harris campaign," or, "You guys are lying to people.” Despite these claims, Washington insists FEMA's leadership is well aware of and implicitly endorses her actions.

Washington shared with interviewer Roland Martin a text message she says she sent to a supervisor about a “politically hostile” road in Lake Placid, noting that canvassing there had ceased. The supervisor’s reported response “Great decision. Thanks for the update” indicates, according to Washington, tacit approval from higher-ups.

The allegations come at a time when federal and state officials are increasingly scrutinizing FEMA’s operational protocols, especially concerning the political neutrality expected of federal disaster relief workers. The agency has not yet provided a response to Washington’s claims, and investigations are ongoing to assess whether FEMA's avoidance tactics reflect a systemic bias in aid distribution.

As this story unfolds, the public must consider the potential consequences of politically biased disaster relief efforts. In times of crisis, all Americans deserve equitable assistance, regardless of political affiliations. FEMA’s reputation and accountability are on the line, as is the trust of the American people.
