Fetterman Says He Cannot Support Trump’s SAVE America Act
The Pennsylvania senator criticizes the sweeping election bill while acknowledging strong public support for voter ID laws.

Senator John Fetterman said this week that he cannot support the SAVE America Act in its current form, creating another flashpoint in the growing national debate over election laws and voting procedures.
The Pennsylvania Democrat made the remarks during an interview on CBS News while discussing the legislation, which is one of President Donald Trump’s top priorities in Congress.
“I can’t ever vote for that,” Fetterman said when asked about the proposal.
The SAVE America Act would introduce several major changes to federal election law, including stricter voter identification requirements and new limits on the use of mail-in ballots.
Supporters argue the bill is designed to strengthen election integrity and restore confidence in the voting system.
Fetterman, however, defended the use of mail-in voting and rejected claims that it poses a significant security risk.
“The president is constantly critical of mail-in voting, and that’s ridiculous,” he said. “It’s safe.”
He pointed to states such as Ohio and Florida both governed by Republicans as examples where mail-in voting has been implemented successfully.
Pennsylvania has become a central part of the debate.
In 2019, the state passed a bipartisan law expanding mail-in voting options for residents. The issue later became highly contentious following the 2020 presidential election, when some Republicans challenged the law in court.
Beyond election procedures, the SAVE America Act also includes several additional policy provisions.
Among them are measures that would:
Require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote
Restrict participation of biological males in women’s sports
Ban certain gender-related medical procedures for minors
Fetterman said he strongly opposes including those issues in the legislation.
“That entire community is already facing enough challenges,” he said while discussing transgender youth.
He argued that decisions about medical treatments should be handled by families and local authorities rather than through federal legislation.
“I think that’s a very personal choice for parents and their children,” he said.
Despite opposing the broader bill, Fetterman acknowledged that a large majority of Americans support voter ID requirements.
Recent polling indicates that more than 80% of Americans favor requiring identification to vote.
“Hey, I’m not going to tell 83% of Americans that they’re wrong,” Fetterman said.
He also rejected some of the more extreme rhetoric surrounding the legislation.
Several Democrats have described the SAVE America Act as “Jim Crow 2.0,” arguing it could disenfranchise millions of voters.
Fetterman said he disagrees with that characterization.
“I would never refer to it as Jim Crow,” he said in a separate television appearance.
Even so, the senator suggested the bill has little chance of passing in its current form.
The Senate filibuster requires 60 votes to advance most legislation, a threshold that is unlikely to be reached given the current political divisions.
Ironically, Fetterman noted that many Democrats once wanted to eliminate the filibuster when they held the Senate majority.
“But now we find ourselves as Democrats, we love the filibuster,” he said.
Republican leaders are still expected to bring the SAVE America Act to the Senate floor for a vote in the coming weeks.
For now, however, the legislation faces a steep climb in a chamber where bipartisan agreement remains difficult to achieve.
