John Fetterman Will Lead Senate Democrats in First Meeting with Trump
The Pennsylvania senator breaks ranks, signaling willingness to work with the Trump administration.
Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) is breaking with his party by becoming the first Senate Democrat to accept a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump. In a stunning move, Fetterman confirmed Thursday that he plans to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, signaling a rare willingness to engage with the incoming administration.
Fetterman explained his reasoning in a statement:
“President Trump invited me to meet, and I accepted. I’m the Senator for all Pennsylvanians not just Democrats in Pennsylvania. I’ve been clear that no one is my gatekeeper. I will meet with and have a conversation with anyone if it helps me deliver for Pennsylvania and the nation.”
Unlike most in his party, Fetterman appears to understand that Trump won a decisive victory and that his policies have strong support from working-class Americans especially in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state.
Fetterman has already shown a willingness to defy his party’s radical stance on immigration. He was the first Senate Democrat to co-sponsor the Laken Riley Act, which would force federal officials to detain illegal aliens charged with theft-related crimes a measure that should have bipartisan support but has been resisted by Democrats who prioritize open borders over American safety.
He has also hinted at supporting at least some of Trump’s cabinet nominees, saying “that’s part of how democracy works.”
Fetterman may find himself isolated within the Democratic Party, which is doubling down on resistance. A recent video posted by Democrats vowed to oppose Trump at every turn, making it clear they are more interested in political obstruction than working for the American people.
Trump has already met with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, showing that some Democrats are at least willing to have a conversation. But Fetterman’s meeting carries even greater weight he is a sitting U.S. senator who is signaling that working with Trump is not off the table.
The exact date of the meeting has not been finalized, but one thing is clear: Trump’s leadership is already forcing cracks in the Democratic Party’s anti-Trump wall. Fetterman’s move will likely put pressure on other Democrats who claim to represent all their constituents not just radical leftists.
As Trump prepares to take office and deliver real results, Americans should take note: Democrats who refuse to engage with him are choosing politics over the people.
