Republicans Demand Answers From FEMA Chief Over Political Bias in Relief Efforts
Lawmakers criticize FEMA leadership for failing to aid Trump supporters after Florida hurricanes.
House Republicans are demanding accountability from FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell after reports surfaced that a FEMA supervisor instructed relief workers to bypass the homes of Trump supporters in the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton in Florida.
In a scathing letter signed by 35 Republican lawmakers from the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, FEMA’s handling of disaster relief was characterized as a “failure of leadership.” The letter, spearheaded by Committee Chair Sam Graves (R-MO) and Subcommittee Chair Scott Perry (R-PA), called for Criswell to provide documents and a briefing by December 2.
Controversial Guidance Sparks Outrage
The controversy stems from now-fired FEMA supervisor Marn’i Washington, who instructed workers to avoid homes displaying Trump signs or flags in Lake Placid. Whistleblowers revealed that around 20 homes were skipped due to this directive. FEMA dismissed Washington on November 9, calling the incident “isolated,” but lawmakers argue it highlights systemic issues within the agency.
The letter stated:
“Your inability to ensure that FEMA provide relief to all Americans affected by disasters, free of discrimination, represents a substantial failure of leadership. The blatant disregard of President-elect Trump supporters directly contradicts FEMA’s core mission and values.”
Broader Concerns Over FEMA’s Focus
Beyond the specific incident, Republicans criticized FEMA’s overall preparedness under the Biden administration, arguing that an emphasis on equity and climate change has come at the expense of disaster readiness. The lawmakers highlighted similar complaints from residents in North Carolina, where FEMA has reportedly been slow to respond after Hurricane Helene.
“It is clear that, under the Biden-Harris Administration, FEMA has been ill-prepared to provide assistance and relief to many Americans in need,” the letter added.
Questions for FEMA Leadership
The lawmakers outlined specific demands ahead of Criswell’s upcoming testimony before the Subcommittee on Economic Development and the House Oversight Committee. They asked FEMA to address:
When officials first learned of the Lake Placid guidance and what actions were taken in response.
Steps FEMA has taken to assist families who were ignored.
Policies implemented to prevent political discrimination in future disaster relief efforts.
Broader concerns about FEMA’s readiness and adherence to its mission.
A Partisan Fallout
This incident has further inflamed tensions between Republicans and the Biden administration. Critics argue that FEMA’s alleged political bias reflects a broader trend of weaponizing government agencies.
“FEMA’s job is to help Americans in need not to engage in political gamesmanship,” one GOP lawmaker said.
As Criswell prepares to testify, the pressure is mounting for FEMA to rebuild trust and demonstrate a commitment to serving all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.
