FBI Confirms Understanding of Trump Shooter's Mindset But Lacks Clear Motive

Questions remain about security failures and FBI's handling of evidence.

The FBI revealed on Wednesday that they have a "clear idea" of the mindset of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. However, despite this understanding, the FBI has yet to establish a definitive motive behind Crooks' actions, leaving many unanswered questions about what drove the young man to such an extreme act.

Key details from the FBI's ongoing investigation include:

  • Crooks reportedly searched online for events featuring both Trump and Joe Biden, ultimately selecting Trump’s Butler rally as a “target of opportunity.”

  • The FBI found no evidence of a co-conspirator or foreign influence, further complicating the search for a clear motive.

  • Concerns about the Secret Service's failure to prevent Crooks from getting into position just 130 yards away from Trump, and questions surrounding the FBI’s handling of evidence, including the cleaning of the rooftop and the rapid cremation of Crooks’ body.

Kevin Rojek, the special agent leading the investigation from the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, emphasized that while Crooks had been surveilling both Trump and Biden, the Butler rally became his focus. This has fueled speculation about whether Crooks had any deeper ideological motivations or simply seized an opportunity without a comprehensive plan.

The FBI’s investigation has been extensive, with nearly 1,000 interviews conducted, numerous search warrants issued, and hundreds of hours of video footage reviewed. Yet, the lack of a clear motive continues to cast a shadow over the case, leading to growing frustration and speculation.

One of the most controversial aspects of the investigation is the FBI’s decision to clean the rooftop from which Crooks fired at Trump. This action has been criticized by a SWAT counter-sniper who was present at the rally, who described the move as "odd" and suggested it may have destroyed critical evidence. Adding to the controversy is the fact that Crooks' body was cremated before the coroner could conduct a thorough examination, raising further suspicions about the investigation’s transparency.

The Department of Justice has remained tight-lipped about how Crooks was able to position himself so close to Trump without being detected by the Secret Service. The incident, which resulted in the death of rally attendee Corey Comperatore and left two others seriously injured, has sparked widespread concern about the security measures in place at such high-profile events.

As the investigation continues, the lack of a clear motive and the handling of key evidence have only deepened the mystery surrounding this unprecedented attack on a former president. The American public is left to wonder how such a breach could have occurred and whether all the facts will ever come to light.
