FBI Raids NYPD Interim Commissioner’s Home Amid Escalating Corruption Investigations
After Edward Caban’s Resignation, New Commissioner Thomas Donlon Becomes Latest Target in Widening Federal Probe.
The NYPD finds itself mired in more turmoil after the FBI raided the home of newly appointed Interim Commissioner Thomas Donlon late last week. The raid comes just days after the resignation of his predecessor, Edward Caban, following a similar federal investigation. The growing scandal is yet another blow to an already embattled New York Police Department.
Donlon, who assumed the role after Caban stepped down, confirmed in a statement that federal agents had executed search warrants at his residences on September 20. “They took materials that came into my possession approximately 20 years ago and are unrelated to my work with the New York City Police Department,” Donlon said, emphasizing that the investigation is not connected to his duties at the NYPD.
While Donlon attempted to distance the investigation from his current position, sources suggest the probe centers on his previous employment with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). According to the New York Post, federal authorities are investigating whether Donlon took classified materials during his tenure at these agencies. Donlon held significant positions, including head of the FBI’s National Threat Assessment Center and the FBI-NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force, as well as director of New York’s Office of Homeland Security under the DHS.
The timing of the investigation has only added to the department’s woes. Just over a week ago, former Commissioner Edward Caban resigned after federal agents seized his phone as part of a broader criminal investigation. The probe is reportedly tied to a nightclub security business owned by Caban’s twin brother, James Caban. Allegations suggest that Caban may have used his influence to “fix potential problems for clubs and bars.”
This marks only one aspect of a widening corruption investigation led by the Southern District of New York, which also involves other NYPD officials. The investigation has cast a shadow over New York City Mayor Eric Adams, whose administration has been plagued by a series of federal probes into those within his inner circle.
Key Details:
The investigation into Donlon’s potential mishandling of classified materials adds another layer to the NYPD's ongoing crisis, which began with Caban’s resignation.
The FBI and IRS are leading the investigation into possible corruption within the department, extending beyond the nightclub security scandal to other city officials.
Mayor Eric Adams himself is under criminal investigation for possible corruption, with numerous individuals in his orbit facing scrutiny. This includes Deputy Mayor Philip Banks, Schools Chancellor David Banks, and former Buildings Commissioner Eric Ulrich, who faces bribery charges.
The ongoing federal probes and recent raids on high-profile officials, including Donlon and Caban, have significantly undermined the credibility of both the NYPD and Mayor Adams' administration. For a city already grappling with crime and public safety concerns, these scandals only heighten the sense of dysfunction at the top of New York's leadership.
As the investigation unfolds, it is clear that no one in City Hall or the NYPD is immune from federal scrutiny, raising questions about just how deep the corruption runs. With key figures in Adams' administration now targets of multiple criminal investigations, the political fallout could be immense.
