FBI Releases New Footage and Details in Hunt for J6 Pipe Bomb Suspect

Authorities renew efforts to identify suspect, offering $500,000 reward.

The FBI’s Washington Field Office has released new information in its ongoing investigation into the suspect who placed pipe bombs near the headquarters of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) on January 5, 2021 the night before the U.S. Capitol riots.

In a renewed push to locate the suspect, the FBI unveiled never-before-seen video footage and announced a $500,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Investigators now estimate the suspect to be approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall and have released close-up images of the Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes the individual was wearing that night. According to the FBI, fewer than 25,000 pairs of the same model were sold between August 2018 and January 2021, potentially narrowing down the pool of leads.

The suspect planted the bombs between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on January 5, 2021, in Washington, D.C.

David Sundberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, provided an update on the extensive investigation:

  • 1,200+ residences and businesses visited

  • 1,000+ interviews conducted

  • 39,000 video files reviewed

  • 600+ tips assessed

Despite these efforts, the suspect remains unidentified. “The tips the FBI has received so far have helped us advance the investigation, but they have not led us to identify the suspect,” Sundberg stated.

The FBI is urging the public to review the new information and report any relevant leads. The Seeking Information webpage features the latest images and details.

With a half-million-dollar reward on the table, authorities are hoping that someone will recognize the suspect and come forward with critical information.
