FBI Pursues Suspected Terror Cell Linked to New Orleans Attack
Explosives, ISIS ties, and coordinated suspects spark manhunt.
The FBI is in hot pursuit of what officials believe to be an Islamic terror cell responsible for the New Orleans attack on New Year’s Day, which left at least 10 dead and scores injured. Evidence suggests that the suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, did not act alone, prompting a nationwide manhunt for accomplices.
The horrifying attack began when Jabbar drove a vehicle through crowds in the French Quarter, killing and injuring dozens before being neutralized by police. Federal authorities revealed that Jabbar carried an ISIS flag and had recently converted to Islam, with associates describing his behavior as “crazy” leading up to the attack.
New Details Emerge in the Investigation:
Coordinated Activity: Surveillance footage captured three men and a woman planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) around the French Quarter prior to the attack.
Remote Detonation Capabilities: Explosives and firearms were found in Jabbar’s vehicle, hidden in coolers and wired to a remote detonator, which was also recovered.
FBI Action: Federal agents have visited Jabbar’s known associates and launched a nationwide search to track down members of the suspected terror cell.
FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Alethea Duncan confirmed during a press conference that Jabbar was not the sole perpetrator:
“We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible. We are aggressively running down every lead, including those of his known associates. That’s why we need the public’s help.”
Louisiana Senator John Kennedy and Governor Jeff Landry both affirmed the ongoing manhunt during the press conference.
“The FBI is in the process of trying to catch the other bad guys,” Kennedy stated.
Governor Landry echoed the urgency:
“Law enforcement is hunting some bad people down.”
Adding to the high-stakes pursuit, national security writer Tom Rogan reported that the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, known for rapid deployment, had arrived in New Orleans to assist.
As federal and local law enforcement intensify their search, the attack raises pressing questions about border security and potential lapses that allowed these individuals to operate undetected. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could aid in apprehending the suspects.
