FBI Unveils Direct Approach to Combat Foreign Election Interference: "Knock It Off"

Critics ridicule FBI Director Wray's attempt to deter foreign interference with a toothless message.

The FBI faced a wave of ridicule on Thursday after an X post featuring a warning from FBI Director Christopher Wray to foreign actors meddling in American elections went viral. The bold strategy? “Knock it off.”

Wray’s stern-sounding directive, reminiscent of past ineffective warnings from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, left many questioning how serious the FBI is about tackling foreign election interference. Critics quickly pounced, mocking the simplistic language as laughably weak.

The FBI’s post read: “‘Knock it off.’ — Says FBI Director Christopher Wray to foreign adversaries meddling in American democracy.”

Key Reactions:

  • Journalist Chuck Ross sarcastically labeled it a “fail-proof tactic,” poking fun at Wray’s supposed seriousness.

  • Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) added, “Xi, Putin, and the Ayatollahs are laughing at this and asking, ‘Or what?’”

  • John Bachman from Newsmax joked that the FBI’s approach was no better than a parent’s scolding to keep feet off a car seat.

This weak rhetoric comes as America faces growing threats of election interference from adversaries like Russia, China, and Iran. But instead of a strong, actionable plan, the FBI seems to be relying on empty words to deter foreign governments from meddling in U.S. democracy.

As national security concerns intensify, the lack of a concrete plan leaves many questioning whether this "knock it off" approach is the best the FBI can do to safeguard the integrity of future elections.
