EU Approves Tariffs on US Goods

Brussels strikes back as Trump defends American industry and demands fair trade.

The globalist bureaucracy in Brussels is once again throwing a tantrum this time over President Trump’s refusal to let foreign nations keep taking advantage of American industry. On Wednesday, the European Commission approved retaliatory tariffs on more than $20 billion worth of American goods in response to the Trump administration’s tariffs on European steel and aluminum.

Trump’s decision to hit European metals with a 25% tariff and introduce an additional 20% tariff on EU imports marks a turning point: America is finally prioritizing its own workers over the demands of international elites. The European Union didn’t take it well.

According to the EU’s own statement, it considers the U.S. tariffs “unjustified and damaging.” But let’s not kid ourselves what they really find “damaging” is losing their free ride.

The EU’s retaliatory measures are set to hit a wide range of American products, including:

  • Soybeans

  • Iron and steel

  • Textiles

  • Tobacco

  • Ice cream (yes, even dessert isn’t safe from the EU’s economic tantrum)

And yet, not everyone in Europe is on board. Hungary stood alone in opposing the retaliatory tariffs, with Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó calling out the economic self-sabotage: “Escalation is not the answer,” he posted, warning that the EU’s move would “raise prices” and hurt its own citizens.

The Trump administration, meanwhile, remains focused on leveling the playing field. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and trade officials have made it clear: the U.S. is open to fair deals, but will not fold under pressure. And why should we? America’s trade deficit with the EU ballooned under Biden’s weak policies hitting over $200 billion in 2023 alone. Trump is simply doing what his predecessor wouldn’t: putting America first.

The EU is scrambling to salvage the situation, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen now begging for a "zero-for-zero" tariff deal. That offer wasn’t on the table when Biden was handing out concessions and making America look weak. Now that Trump is back and calling the shots, Europe suddenly wants to negotiate.

Let’s be clear: these retaliatory tariffs from the EU, like the recent Chinese tariffs, are nothing more than desperate attempts to slow down a U.S. comeback led by President Trump. They know their advantage is slipping. And as Trump continues his mission to bring back American jobs and industries, foreign leaders are realizing that the free ride is over.
