Emory Fires Daughter of Iranian Regime Official After Campus Backlash

University caves to protests over hiring of U.S.-based academic tied to brutal Iranian crackdown.

In a rare but much-needed course correction, Emory University has officially dismissed Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani the daughter of a senior Iranian regime official following intense backlash from Iranian-American activists and growing national scrutiny. The move comes after Ardeshir-Larijani’s controversial appointment sparked protests and demands for accountability at one of America’s top medical schools.

Ardeshir-Larijani, who had been working as an assistant professor in Emory’s Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology, was terminated just days after demonstrators gathered outside the university’s Winship Cancer Institute. Protesters condemned her hiring, pointing to her close family ties to Ali Larijani, a high-ranking figure in the Iranian regime who has publicly defended brutal crackdowns on peaceful protesters and lashed out at the U.S. government especially President Trump.

Let’s connect the dots:

  • Ali Larijani, sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department, is a key architect of Iran’s violent response to anti-regime protests.

  • He has directly threatened American troops, warning that U.S. support for Iranian protesters would “destabilize the region.”

  • His daughter lived and worked freely in the U.S., even as her father coordinated the suppression of human rights in Iran.

How did she get here in the first place?

That’s exactly what the nonprofit Alliance Against Islamic Regime of Iran Apologists (AAIRIA) asked in their call for a federal investigation. The group urged authorities to review Ardeshir-Larijani’s immigration and visa status, citing national security concerns and the glaring hypocrisy of regime officials denouncing the U.S. while their family members enjoy its freedoms, wealth, and institutions.

“Why should the daughter of a man who publicly supports violent crackdowns against freedom-seeking Iranians be allowed to teach in America’s universities?” one protester asked. It’s a fair question and one Emory University could no longer ignore.

Congressman Buddy Carter (R-GA) went further, calling not only for her termination but also for revocation of her medical license by Georgia’s medical board. The demand followed a surge in public pressure after reports surfaced of Ardeshir-Larijani’s presence on Emory Healthcare’s website, where she had been listed as a practicing hematologist-oncologist.

It’s important to remember the broader context.

  • This incident came just two weeks after the U.S. sanctioned Ali Larijani for his role in the crackdown on demonstrators following Iran’s latest wave of internal protests.

  • President Trump had issued a stern warning on Jan. 2, stating that if Iran killed peaceful protesters, “we are locked and loaded and ready to go.”

  • Larijani responded with belligerent threats, blaming the U.S. and accusing Trump of destabilizing the Middle East.

Yet his daughter was still comfortably teaching at a respected American university until now.

This case illustrates the disturbing double standards the U.S. continues to allow: while authoritarian regimes brutalize their own people and threaten American interests, their family members often enjoy elite status in the West. That needs to stop.

Emory’s decision is a step in the right direction, but it didn’t happen on its own. It came after public outrage, grassroots activism, and congressional pressure made it impossible to ignore.

Let’s keep pushing for transparency, justice, and accountability not just in academia, but across every institution.
