Eminem Set to Introduce Obama at Detroit Rally Amid Kamala’s Fight for Michigan

Democrats turn to star power in tight battleground race as Trump edges ahead in Michigan polls.

In a last-minute push to secure Michigan, rapper Eminem is set to introduce former President Barack Obama at a rally in Detroit for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on Tuesday night. While Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, isn’t scheduled to perform, his appearance underscores the Democrats’ reliance on celebrity influence to rally voters in key battleground states.

Michigan is critical for the Harris-Walz campaign as polls show the GOP slightly ahead. Donald Trump currently holds a narrow lead in the state, with recent data showing him up by (+0.9). With Election Day fast approaching, both parties are ramping up efforts to sway undecided voters.

Eminem’s long-standing disdain for Trump is well documented. The Detroit native endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020, even allowing his hit song “Lose Yourself” to be used in campaign ads. He has publicly criticized Trump multiple times, starting with a fiery anti-Trump performance at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards. During his acceptance speech, Eminem drew a line in the sand, telling Trump supporters, “You’re either for or against,” urging fans to choose sides.

Eminem’s appearance at the rally reflects a broader strategy by the Democrats to leverage Hollywood and musical icons to energize voters, especially in places like Michigan where Trump’s populist appeal remains strong. Michigan, Eminem's home state, remains one of the most closely watched battlegrounds, and the rapper’s involvement is designed to resonate with younger, more progressive voters who helped secure the state for Biden in 2020.

The Trump campaign responded with confidence, as recent polls indicate a tightening race in battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Nationally, Trump continues to gain momentum, putting additional pressure on the Harris-Walz campaign to hold crucial states.

Eminem has been vocal about his disdain for Trump since 2016, accusing the former president of “brainwashing” his supporters. In a December 2017 interview, the rapper explained how Trump’s rhetoric “makes [his] blood boil,” stressing that the country cannot thrive with Trump at the helm. This marks a stark contrast to their relationship before Trump’s political rise, when the two appeared on good terms Trump even appeared on Eminem's 2004 MTV concert special, The Shady National Convention.

As Democrats bring out their biggest names in an attempt to regain ground, Republicans remain focused on maintaining their lead. With just weeks left until the election, Michigan voters are being bombarded by both sides, making it clear that the outcome in this state could tip the balance of the 2024 race.
