Elon Musk Fires Back After Union Files Charges Over Trump X Spaces Exchange
The UAW targets Musk and Trump as the 2024 election heats up.
Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk didn't hold back on Tuesday after the United Auto Workers (UAW) union filed labor charges against him and former President Donald Trump. The charges stem from a Monday evening discussion on X Spaces, where Trump praised Musk as "the greatest cutter," lauding him for firing employees who went on strike. Musk’s brief, laughing response of “Yeah” sparked backlash from the union.
Although Trump didn’t specify a company during the exchange, it’s widely understood he was referring to Musk’s actions at Twitter—now rebranded as X—where Musk slashed the workforce significantly after purchasing the platform in 2022.
In retaliation, the UAW announced that it had filed federal labor charges, accusing Musk and Trump of trying to intimidate and threaten workers engaged in protected activities. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is set to investigate the union’s claims and could potentially pursue legal action against the two if it finds any wrongdoing.
Musk, known for his candid and often provocative social media presence, quickly fired back on X. Responding to a post about the UAW’s charges featuring a photo of union president Shawn Fain, Musk suggested that Fain could end up incarcerated due to criminal activity, noting that “the last two UAW presidents went to prison for bribery & corruption and, based on recent news, it looks like this guy will join them!”
Musk’s jab references the recent imprisonment of two former UAW presidents, Gary Jones and Dennis Williams, both of whom were convicted in a major corruption scandal. Although Fain is not directly connected to their leadership, Musk’s comments underscore the ongoing tension between the billionaire and labor unions.
The UAW has recently thrown its support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s rival in the upcoming 2024 election. Trump, in response, has called for Fain’s firing and insisted that auto workers should support him instead. This latest spat between Musk, Trump, and the UAW further inflames the already contentious atmosphere as the election season ramps up.
Musk, whose companies Tesla and SpaceX have frequently clashed with labor unions and the NLRB, officially endorsed Trump last month after the former president survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The controversial comments about firing employees arose shortly after Trump suggested Musk could assist with a potential Government Efficiency Commission to reduce wasteful spending.
As the battle lines are drawn, the clash between big tech, big labor, and the political establishment continues to intensify, with Musk and Trump firmly in the spotlight.
