Elon Musk Demands Congress Halt Legislation Until Trump Takes Office

Musk condemns spending bill as a betrayal of Americans, urges lawmakers to reject pork-laden measures.

Tech mogul Elon Musk has issued a bold demand to Congress: stop passing bills until President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January. Musk's statement, delivered via social media on Wednesday, comes as lawmakers debate a contentious continuing resolution (CR) aimed at avoiding a government shutdown.

“No bills should be passed until Jan. 20, when [Trump] takes office,” Musk declared, emphasizing his disdain for the $100 billion disaster aid package and other provisions included in the proposal. The stopgap measure, negotiated between a Republican-led House and a Democrat-controlled Senate, also seeks funding for various pet projects, including infrastructure improvements, pay raises for Congress, and healthcare reforms.

Musk wasn’t alone in his outrage. Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who is set to join Musk in leading Trump’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), shared his detailed criticism of the 1,547-page legislation. Ramaswamy described the bill as a bloated package filled with unnecessary spending and politically motivated “pork barrel” provisions.

Among the troubling elements highlighted by Musk and Ramaswamy:

  • Funding for what Musk called “the worst illegal censorship operation in the entire government” (referring to the Global Engagement Center, or GEC).

  • Billions allocated for special interest groups and unrelated political giveaways.

  • A lack of meaningful reforms addressing the nation's growing fiscal crisis.

Musk even took aim at lawmakers themselves, stating, “Any member of the House or Senate who votes for this outrageous spending bill deserves to be voted out in two years!”

Musk characterized the proposed legislation as a “crime against the American people,” adding that a government shutdown would not halt essential operations. His comments resonate with conservative critics who have long argued that temporary funding measures allow Congress to sidestep accountability and delay critical spending reforms.

Congress has leaned on CRs in recent years to avoid full-scale budget negotiations. Last September, lawmakers employed a similar strategy when they failed to agree on appropriations bills. These stopgap measures, while politically expedient, often exacerbate government inefficiency and fiscal irresponsibility.

President-elect Trump also expressed his opposition to the bill, according to Fox News host Lawrence Jones. Musk’s comments have drawn support from several Republican lawmakers who are rallying to block the legislation, arguing that it contradicts the priorities of the incoming administration.

However, resistance within the GOP isn’t universal. A senior House Republican reportedly told Fox News that Musk's involvement is unhelpful, advising him to focus on broader issues instead of criticizing the party's internal debates.

With the clock ticking toward a potential government shutdown, Musk's call to action adds pressure on lawmakers to reconsider the bloated CR. As the nation prepares for new leadership under Trump, the demand for fiscal responsibility and government accountability has never been greater.

Musk’s fiery rhetoric and detailed critiques reflect the urgency of the moment: America’s future depends on whether its leaders prioritize the interests of the people over entrenched bureaucratic waste.
