Elon Musk's Companies Face Over 20 Federal Probes Amid Rising Political Influence

Despite investigations, Musk's financial power and support for Trump continue to grow.

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures, has faced at least 20 federal investigations across multiple agencies. While Musk’s companies have secured billions in government contracts, they have also attracted a flurry of regulatory scrutiny from the Justice Department, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and several other federal bodies.

Tesla and SpaceX, two of Musk's most successful companies, have repeatedly been the target of government probes and fines. The companies, which collectively secured nearly $3 billion in contracts from 17 federal agencies last year alone, have had to navigate constant regulatory challenges. SpaceX has been hit with violations by both the Transportation Department and the EPA, while Tesla faces investigations by the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and others.

The Times notes Musk’s extraordinary influence over the federal government through his businesses but also points to the growing number of regulatory battles they face. SpaceX has been under fire from various agencies, including a discrimination lawsuit filed by the Justice Department and an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) violation from the Labor Department. Meanwhile, Tesla faces its own lawsuits and violations, including an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission suit and EPA enforcement actions.

But the scrutiny extends beyond Musk’s headline-grabbing enterprises like Tesla and SpaceX. Neuralink, his brain-implant company, was fined by the Transportation Department and investigated by the Agriculture Department. X, formerly known as Twitter, has been under SEC investigation since Musk acquired it two years ago, facing court orders and other regulatory hurdles.

Despite all of this, Musk remains undeterred. His frustration with excessive regulations is well known, and he recently filed a lawsuit against a California regulator, accusing them of blocking SpaceX launches for political reasons. "It is illegal for them to make decisions based on what they (mostly wrongly) think are my politics," Musk said, accusing regulators of breaking the law by targeting him for his support of Donald Trump.

Musk’s alignment with Trump has become more evident in recent months. The billionaire has thrown his financial might behind Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, campaigning with the former president and holding solo town halls to boost voter turnout in swing states like Pennsylvania. Musk is also advocating for a "government efficiency" commission under a potential second Trump administration to eliminate bureaucratic waste, a move that has raised eyebrows given the number of federal investigations his companies face.

Critics argue Musk’s involvement in government reform could pose a conflict of interest, as his businesses remain under the eye of federal agencies. While the idea of cutting bureaucratic red tape might resonate with many voters, Musk’s unique position as both a government contractor and a high-profile Trump supporter has left some questioning whether his motives are purely altruistic. The Times notes that while Musk's official power under a second Trump administration would be limited, his suggestions could still have an impact if he singles out specific agencies as examples of government waste or mismanagement.

As Musk’s influence grows, the scrutiny will likely intensify. With over 20 investigations already ongoing, his battle with federal regulators is far from over. However, Musk’s ability to navigate the murky waters of politics and business has only solidified his standing as one of the most powerful and controversial figures in America.
