DeSantis Deploys Troops to Keep Ports Open Amid Strikes and Hurricane Aftermath
As hurricane victims struggle, Florida's governor takes decisive action while Biden remains silent.
As the southern U.S. reels from the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken bold action to ensure that vital supplies reach the hardest-hit areas. In a Thursday press conference, DeSantis announced that he had authorized the deployment of state troops to ports affected by ongoing dock worker strikes, ensuring that they remain operational during this critical time.
DeSantis’ decisive move comes in the wake of a deadly storm that tore through several southern states, leaving at least 200 people dead and entire communities submerged in floodwaters. With ports serving as vital supply hubs for disaster-stricken regions, the governor made it clear that allowing them to shut down due to strikes was not an option. "It really is incumbent upon the Biden-Harris administration to do everything in their power to ensure that these goods are where we need them," DeSantis said, pointing out the dire need for supplies across Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.
Key actions announced by DeSantis to keep the ports open and goods flowing:
The Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard have been deployed to maintain order and, where possible, resume operations at impacted ports.
Toll collections and size and weight restrictions for commercial vehicles will be waived, expediting the transportation of goods and offsetting costs for companies shipping supplies.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) will manage traffic from seaports and provide law enforcement escorts for commercial vehicles carrying essential goods.
DeSantis’ leadership stands in stark contrast to the Biden administration’s inaction. While dock worker strikes risk halting the flow of critical supplies to disaster zones, Biden and Harris have failed to intervene, leaving it up to state governments to find solutions. DeSantis didn’t mince words about the administration's failure, stressing that they have a "responsibility to stand up for the storm victims" and ensure that supplies make it to those in need.
The port shutdowns couldn’t come at a worse time. With homes destroyed, families displaced, and communities left scrambling for basic necessities, any delay in goods arriving at southern ports could have catastrophic consequences. "To have this happen in a way that could negatively impact people reeling from a Category 4 Hurricane, that is simply unacceptable," DeSantis said.
The governor's quick decision to waive tolls and road restrictions for commercial trucks is a practical response aimed at minimizing logistical bottlenecks that could further delay disaster relief. This measure, alongside FHP’s offer of law enforcement escorts for supply trucks, demonstrates DeSantis' commitment to putting Floridians first.
In a statement following the press conference, DeSantis reinforced his administration’s hands-on approach: "Unlike the federal government, Florida is taking decisive action to ensure that our economy continues to function and that victims of Hurricane Helene will have access to what they need to rebuild."
While the nation watches, DeSantis is proving that strong leadership matters in times of crisis. His swift actions will ensure that those devastated by the storm are not left waiting for help. In the face of federal inaction, Florida is standing firm, and DeSantis is leading the way to recovery.
