Majority of Democrats Support Replacing Biden for 2024, Poll Finds

Growing Sentiment for New Candidate Amid Declining Support for Biden

A recent Rasmussen poll reveals that a majority of Democrats are in favor of replacing President Joe Biden with another candidate ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The survey, conducted from May 20th to 22nd with 1,113 likely voters, shows a significant shift in sentiment within the Democratic Party.

Key Findings:

  • Support for Replacement
54 percent of Democrats approve of selecting a new candidate to replace Biden as the Democratic nominee. Overall, 49 percent of all likely voters share this view, including 43 percent of Republicans.

  • Likelihood of Replacement
Despite the approval, only 38 percent of Democrats believe it is likely that Biden will be replaced, while 57 percent think it is improbable. This marks a shift from February when 47 percent of likely voters thought a replacement was likely.

  • Preferred Alternatives
When asked about potential replacements, 17 percent of Democrats favored Vice President Kamala Harris, 21 percent preferred former First Lady Michelle Obama, and 11 percent supported former candidate Hillary Clinton. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer received 8 percent and 5 percent support, respectively, while 31 percent of respondents chose “None of them.”

These findings come amid waning support for Biden in his potential November rematch against former President Donald Trump. Recent polling indicates that Trump leads Biden in five out of seven crucial swing states, is tied in Nevada, and trails by a slim margin in Michigan.

Additional polls highlight that Americans trust Trump more than Biden on key issues such as immigration, crime, and the economy. These issues are expected to play a significant role in the upcoming presidential election.

The growing sentiment among Democrats to consider new leadership reflects concerns about Biden’s electability and effectiveness as president. As the 2024 election approaches, the Democratic Party faces critical decisions on whether to support Biden’s re-election bid or to rally behind a new candidate.
