Democrats Allocate Millions to Challenge Abortion Laws in GOP States Before Election
DNC focuses on abortion rights to mobilize voters in battleground states for 2024 election.
As the 2024 election approaches, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is intensifying its efforts to spotlight abortion laws in Republican-led states, aiming to galvanize voters around this contentious issue. The DNC has allocated $8.3 million across state parties for 2024 and committed over $1 million in grants to battleground states for honing their abortion-related messaging, according to a party memo obtained by CBS News.
DNC Communications Director Rosemary Boeglin emphasized the importance of mobilizing voters on the second anniversary of Roe v. Wade being overturned. “The only way to restore and expand women’s reproductive freedoms is reelecting President Biden and Vice President Harris, and electing Democrats up and down the ballot,” Boeglin wrote.
The DNC is investing $4.5 million into the "Red State Fund" to counteract abortion bans in Republican-leaning states.
The fund aims to support Democrats in these states by providing resources and reinforcing pro-abortion rights messaging.
Despite Trump's claim he would not sign a national abortion ban, Democrats are targeting his stance on abortion to sway voters.
Democrats have successfully shifted the focus to abortion in previous elections, especially after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Pro-abortion measures have consistently won at the ballot box, even in traditionally conservative states.
President Biden, facing low approval ratings and trailing in key battleground states, is leveraging the abortion issue to rally his base. In a recent video, Biden criticized Trump and conservatives for their “extremism” on abortion, pledging to “fight like hell to restore Roe v. Wade.”
While Democrats are doubling down on abortion messaging, voters have indicated that the economy, inflation, and immigration remain top priorities. An April CBS News/YouGov poll revealed that voters in battleground states rank the economy as the most pressing issue, with many describing the economic situation as “fairly bad” or “very bad.”
As the election draws nearer, the DNC's strategy will test whether a focused campaign on abortion rights can effectively mobilize voters amid broader concerns about the nation’s economic health.
